internet explorer pop ups - help!!

I am on aol but keep getting constant internet explorer pop up adverts. It is getting to a point when i can't even be online because it is such a problem. When i say constant that is just what i mean - ALL THE FRIGIN TIME without fail. Can I disable them somehow? I have tried the pop up stopper type of download but I might as well just try and jump to the moon than have a hope of these working

i haven't seen one of those yet, and don't know exactly what kind of pop up it is, but knowing microsoft, it is coming through windows messenger. Here is a small article about these and how to shut messenger down once and for all. also note that windows messenger is not the same as MSN messenger.

This depends on where the pop-ups are coming from. Most browsers (Opera, Netscape, Mozilla, Avant, AOL, etc.) have pop-up stopper options (under options or preferences). In AOL go to "AOL Keyword" and type in "Pop-up Controls" (it is case sensitive). For those that don't (Internet Explorer, or example) you can find a lot of 3rd party pop-up stoppers simply by going to Google (or any other search engine) and entering "pop-ups" or "ad blockers".

If the ads are coming through Windows Messenger Service (the gray dialog boxes), use curtybob's link to disable Messenger Service:

Click Start > Run and type "services.msc" (no quotes) in the Open: line and click OK
In the right pane, scroll down to Messenger.
Double click Messenger and click the General tab.
Under Service Status: click the Stop button.
In the Startup Type: drop down box, select Disable.
Click Apply and OK.

Another method is to block NetBIOS ports 135, 137, 138. and 139 through the firewall. Each firewall uses a different method of blocking ports. Consult the firewall documentation or website for information on the proper procedure.

to say that all your pop ups are coming from msn messenger is speculation to say the least
but the previous advise was good
i would uninstall msn messenger completly.......it is a highly exploitable irc.it uses a program called loadqm ( if you look in task manager you will see it)..........DISABLE IT........microsoft has been queried about what this is exactly and are quite evasive in their replys......the popular conclusion is it is another microsoft phone home device ( trojan) and is highly useable by any cracker worth his weight in nano probes........as far as your pop ups..simply get pop up stopper pro or a firewall with pop up control...like zone alarm pro ....opera is also a good browser but a bit more exploitable than IE 6 .i reccomend IE 6 and pop up stopper
good luck!!!
