Wireless

Well here goes:

First I brought my old-sucky IBM Thinkpad T40 laptop to my dormitory school.
First it worked with my wireless adapter built into the laptop..

Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter

Then, just one day, the wireless connection for that disappeared, I couldn't use that driver... So I went to walmart and got myself a card thingy..

Wireless G adapter or something like it.. it worked, I was happy

Then about a few weeks later, just one day it stopped working.. i think maybe two weeks ago..

And I reinstalled all the drives, I fiound my

Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter

My wireless is on, the signal says so, the internet connects but I cannot receive any signal, only send...

No the wireless for this dormitory is not wrong, other people's computers work.

Also my ip address is 169.254.xxx.xxx ...which means it's not working..

it should be 10.0.0.XXX ..

Well anyways i went to the network administrator, he found a free ip for me so I changed it to that, but it still doesn't work..

(I went to network connections-the network's properties-properties of the Internet protocol, changed the ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway to a one that should be working)

Also if I do "ping "my ip address"" this comes up:

it comes as sent 4, received 4, lost 0

and the minimum, maximum, and average is 0//

Also:

Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1500MHz 238 mHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

That's all the info I can tell you...if you need more tell me how to get it..

169 is usually a valid IP address so please dont assume this is wrong.

What did you ping? Was it a website?

If you go to start - run - cmd - type in Ipconfig /all

It should show you the IP addres and default gateway.

Ping the default gateway, if that comes back sent 4 recieved 4, then your machine is talking to the router.

Then try and ping the IP address and again if it comes back sent 4 recieved 4 then the internets OK.

Reset the router!

I'm saying this school's ip is 10.0.0.1~255

Also I dont have a gateway.. I set internet protocol to auto-set and here goes:

....what the.. I try ipconfig/all and now htis comes up:

An internetnal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning. Please contact microsoft product support services for further help. additional information: unknown media status code

Anyways that comes up sometimes, it goes away with time...

my ip comes out as 169.254,151.166
subnet mask 255.255.0.0
No default gateway (The previous 10.0.0.2 gateway was manually set because everyone here has the same default gateway)

Also ...seeing that the guy in the next room's wireless works, resetting the router wouldn't really help would it?

(win xp)

Right now it is limited or no connectivity, if I change ip address
10.0.0.127 (valid, network admin checked, it's free)
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 10.0.0.2
Dns sever: 205.152.132.23
205.152.37.23

if I change it to that, at least the limited connectivity goes away...

Also if something error comes up as something like "Unable to connect to DHCP server" what should I do?
