Internet speeds???

Can anyone tell me if using a wireless router slows down your internet connection speed? I am using a 7 MB DSL and on the desktop i am using am getting about a 5 to 6 MB speed from the connection, however on my laptop using a netgear wireless router my speed is showing about .5 MB speed. Is this normal or is there some way to speed this up. I hate to pay for it if I am not getting the most from the DSL.
Thanks for any help or information.

that is a normal......think about it, how do you measure the speed !! by going to test speed sites ??? (I guess so)....how far are they ? how many hope does it takes to get to your PC ...those all come into effect.....When it says 7 Meg DSL speed....it means in ideal situation...(Ideal is a server sitting on the next building with fiber connection).

We have dedicated 10 Meg fiber at work and I never been able to download anything from anywhere at that speed....the fasted I have seen is downloading Office 2007 (460 meg in 2 minutes and 52 second).

Cheers

with respect snowmonkey, whilst you are spot on about us never getting the actual bandwidth we pay for (for the reasons you give), he's already established that his actual bandwidth in his house is in the region of 5-6 Mb. So it definitely should not drop down to 0.5Mb on the wireless connection --- something is wrong with his hardware or setup, nothin to do with circumstances beyond his control.

I would try setting the wireless card to a different channel, or the card itself may be too far from the router giving a very weak carrier signal so see what it's like when you use it nearer to the router. A card with a longer range might be the answer. I really can't say for sure, but I do know there should not be such a large discrepancy between wired and wireless performance.
