Network Connection Connected Unable to browse

I just bought a brand new Compaq Presario V6133CL Laptop and it worked out of the box connecting to the hotel wifi and everything worked great, then, I made the mistake of choosing automatic updates and the new ie7 installed and all of a sudden I was left with an excellent network connection but unable to browse. I checked everything I knew of but still no internet browsing. I tried uninstalling ie7 and when I tried to run ie6 again it no longer worked. I ran the complete system restore and still had excellent connection but could not browse. I decided to download firefox and installed it and it does not browse either. I am using another laptop sitting right next to the new one and am having no problems with it but did not allow it to download ie7. I am not sure that ie7 is the culprit but it seems to stem from the time it was installed. I just have a hard time believing that after doing a complete system restore I still have the same problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The os is Windows xp media center edition.

Hey Timmy

Strangely enough, I have just experienced the same problem you described and I have upgraded to IE7 recently.

I did contact my ISP immediately and we went through every single trouble-shooting trick in the book, all to no avail. My ISP is NTL and as they use MAC addresses with their cable modems, it was possible to identify my presence online, yet we were absolutely unable to ping another site.

I have fixed the problem now, simply by performing a full format and reinstall and of course avoiding IE7 like a plague. I have since been advised that many people are having this problem with IE7 and only a few of them have been able to get browsing capabilities back by using System Restore.

In my very humble opinion - IE7 is to blame. I hope this helps you to resolve the problem.
