Java Problems

I like to play online poker, and have never had problems before, but recently I moved and am using a verizon DSL connection. My problem is that my java windows do not refresh often enough, and 9 out of 10 poker hands are folded because it takes too long for my computer to realize it is my turn to bet. I don't know if it is a java problem or a browser problem, or just an internet speed problem. I also have a problem with AIM... my outgoing messages seem to take a long time to be recieved, and my incoming messages come in waves about every 30 seconds, not really 'instant messaging', haha. I assume the problems are related. Thanks for any help you can give me.
