In addition to bookworm's comments regarding anti-spyware, anti-malware, etcetera, I would also recommend the following, free, excellent applications: -
CCleaner (Download v 1.41.544) Do not use the issues section if you are not familiar with editing the registry.
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1
SUPERAntiSpyware Free
AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition
And to a lesser degree: -
a-squared Free
Just ensure that you configure them correctly, (using the help files and the relevant websites support links and forums) update them on a daily basis and scan with them, with the exception of SpywareBlaster 3.5.1, on a weekly basis.

AVAST! is a great free antivirus as well. It auto updates a few times a day. I have used this free program for over 5 years and has saved my butt a few times. Very easy to use.

Avast!
This is the one to go with. Covers all the bases. And, most of all, it's free (the Home Edition). Covers me when I do P2P downloading.

There is NO good free virus protection. Use mcafee or kapersky If you have free then if your computer gets a virus then you have no warranty or any means of getting it fixed for free.

Sorry not true. Virus protection is just that..protection no warranties. There are many good and bad anti-virus software that are free and sold. And there are many sites that are dedicated to testing these programs.

You will also find that a lot of companies offer free and bought programs.
