Cannot Connect to Internet

Greetings,

Over the past couple of days I have been unable to use any program that accesses the internet. When using internet explorer I get messages like "Cannot display this page" or "Invalid Address."

The cable modem seems to be working fine. In fact I called my isp and they said that they are getting a signal from the modem and that the problem seems to be software-related.

All of the green lights on the modem are lit steady and the amber "computer activity" button flashes. This is how the lights always were, even when the cable modem was working.

I have only interacted with the computer once before the problem started and that was to trasnfer a file from my hard disk to my girlfriend's flash drive. The file transferred fine. Of note, when I plugged the flash drive into her computer it said "the drive may have data that is corrupt," but the file worked fine.

The only other thing I can think of is that the power went off a couple of times before the problem happened.

I have scanned for viruses and spyware. I have clicked the "repair connection button. I have went to dos prompt and used the ping command (with failure to connect as a result). I have switched usb slots for the cable modem. I have disconnected the cable modem and reconnected it 5 minutes later. I have even done a system restore for a date 4 days previous to the modem not working.

Can someone PLEASE help me. I go to college and the semester just started and I NEED the internet to do my work

ps - My firewall, virus protection, spyware protection settings have not changed in over a year. Also, the tech I spoke to from my isp said my DNS servers are fine.

Thank you in advance,
Mudplayerx

RE: Cannot Connect to Internet

I had once a similar problem. The problem was caused by a corrupted TCP stack. To fix these errors you can try the following:

You can reset both the winsock and tcp/ip stack in XP SP2 by following these directions:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299357
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;811259

The command to reset the Winsock is:

netsh winsock reset catalog

And for tcp/ip

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

You will need to reboot afterwards.

Best Regards
Jake Michaels
