slow connection / router problems

I live in a guest house with a few other guys and we just get internet from the main house via wireless connection. My 3 roommates have laptops and I use a desktop. I use a Dynex wireless network card (DX-WGNBC I think it's label is). I have had a guy I know work on my computer a few times and he's fixed my other problems but I have no desire to pay for any more service.

The problem is, my friends get great unhindered speeds to the internet but I get long crappy lag spikes whether or not they are connected. The guy who came said that the router in the main house is great and the laptops got reception even in the farthest part of the backyard. What can I do to rid myself of these slow internet speeds? If anyone can help me and needs my system specs or anything just let me know what you need me to post.

Hiya,

If the laptops are getting better signals from the router, then it could be a driver problem on your Pc, or your wireless card is dying on ya!

If you plug your PC directly in to the router, how does it work then? Better, same?

If it's better, then it's clearly your wireless card.

When you scan for wireless networks, do you see more than just your router? If you do, just as a quick test, connect to a spare router and see if it works, again if the fault still occurs, then I'd say get a new wireless card or format your Pc just to make sure.

Well plugging my PC directly to the router is out of the question, there is probably a good 30~ feet between my computer and the router.

I'm not sure if the problem would be the wireless card cause I bought it about a week ago.

I tried looking for another router and I'm not sure if what showed up was a router, but I tried connecting and it said it had limited or no connection and I couldn't access the net.

I'm not really sure what formatting my PC would do. Can you elaborate on what that is and how it might help me?
Could the problem be that my network card with its antenna are in the back of the computer and it has some sort of interference from the cables back there?

Thanks =D

Hi,

to be honest, anything can cause wireless to be causing issues.

Formatting the Pc means wiping it clean and putting it back to it's factory settings.

If it says limited or no connectivity on another wireless, then it could be a poor signal.

Try and put the router closer to your Pc, or vice versa!

Even tho your card is a week old, it could still be faulty, have it checked out at a friends or a local PC store.
