Question Static IP

Hi

I run a small business, a supplier I use has asked for confirmation of contact details i.e name, address, phone number etc. They have also asked for my static IP address. Does anyone know of any reason why they would want this? I'm puzzled as they already have my details.... except my static IP address.

Thanks

Most of the time ISPs provide u with a dynamic ip.A dynamic ip is one that changes ever so often(usually each time u switch on ur modem).A static ip on the other hand is one that remains constant and will not change. If u need a static ip u need to set it up yourself or ask ur ISP.If u want to try setting it up jus check the following Link.

Spannerhead,

I can think on only two scenario:

1- your supplier does know the difference between the static and dynamic and some one added the request to the list who had no idea what they were asking.

2- Your supplier, is spying on you........There are more ways then one to spy on users with Static IP address.....IP I were you I would get a decent Firewall and only allow "certain" software to access Internet.

I have a small customer myself and I asked them to acquire static IP address as well.......Here is why....my customer, has business and they want to access their computer from outside......having said that, I suggested Radmin or remote desktop and a bit of port forwarding on the router ........There is no reason other then being able to access the computer inside of a network from "anywhere'' for static IP address.

Do you want to explain what you supplier do!?

Cheers

Do you order online frm the same place repeatedly?
A static IP would help towards security if it was expected an order came from the same place each time, though it's not infallable.
It could also be used to blacklist you. Ask them the reason.
