Wi-Fi Adaptors

I currently have broadband via a router connected by Ethernet to my PC. I have recently purchased a laptop which has Wi-Fi built in. To update/download anything on my laptop I have to disconnect the Ethernet cable from my main machine and plug it into my laptop. Not difficult, but continued plugging/unplugging cannot do the machines any good.
My router can be changed from Ethernet to Wi-Fi with a simple (?) command so I am wondering if it would be in my interests to change to Wi-Fi completely. I know adaptors are fairly cheap but which is best - USB or a PCI card? Average range for the laptop away from the router would be 30ft
Any advice appreciated.
