Connection, high-speed probl...........

I hate to come to forums, and ask for advice considering I normally don’t run into these issue’s.

My boyfriend uses ‘D-link’, which the internet cord directly plugs into rather than the Ethernet outlet. I recently recovered my own laptop, and I decided since I currently don’t have my router plugged in that I would just use the internet modems connection for now by plugging it into my own Ethernet outlet. It works fine, but when I went to reconnect it to my boyfriend’s it searches as if it is trying to connect to a wireless connection, (this strikes me as odd since he doesn’t even have the wireless connection configured on his laptop). Anyways, when I reconnect it to his D-link, it attempts to acquire an IP address, but fails. When it does finally connect it says ‘there is limited, or no connectivity”.

I’m not exactly a computer expert here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
