Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini Adapter goes out of range

I am an educator, I teach computer repair, so this is baffling. I have found sites such as CNN where I want to view a video that must be streaming as I am not able to download, just play. Once I click on link, my adapter goes dead and reads "Out of Range." The only way to recover my wireless network is to reboot my router (Linksys). I have tried all kind of things such as configuring my Firewall (built-in XP), looking through the wireless router settings, settings in Windows Media Player, etc. I am totally baffled as I would like to view these videos. I think it's something to do with the router since it happens on all my computers, not just my laptop. Darn. This is frustrating. If someone has had this experience, let me know. Maybe my ISP (Cox Communications) is blocking something. I don't think so. If you have an idea, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached at sharon.hain@gmail.com. I'm pretty desperate.

Could you tell me which Linksys router are you using? I mean model number, version and how old it is.

I have a Linksys BEFW1154 wireless router. It's a B version but that isn't the problem. It has to do with some setting I'm sure. Aggrevating! I have absolutely no trouble with the router and getting on the Internet. Just this darn streaming video issue.

What's baffling is that I can view some videos directly such as YouTube.

Can get on some sites after changing the MTU on the router but still can't get PBS videos. When I try to click on the video, the wireless adapter displays "out of range." I can get the videos on some sites from other locations. Just can't figure out what it is.

I am not actually downloading anything. PBS's website allows you to find the video, then choose that you have dial-up or cable/dsl and then the video should display. Mine doesn't. It gets to the video screen and then "whoosh"--the wireless adapter shows "out of range." So I have to go reboot the router and I'm back in business. Something is playing havoc with the router I'm guessing. I investigated some solutions at www.linksys.com and found a way to check on packet fragmentation in order to set my MTU slightly below. Instead of the standard packet size of 1500, I set the the MTU to 1480. That didn't seem to help with PBS--I think it might have helped with CNN where I seem to remember having trouble. Baffling, baffling.

How far are you from your router? I mean the approx. distance between your router and your laptop or other computers. Also this could be the problem of the router's antennas. The antennas might not be sending signals properly.

Just check and reply.

I'm only about 30 feet from the router where I sit with my laptop. Signal strength is always good. So . . . I don't think that's the issue. The fact that I can view YouTube videos and other videos but not those that seem to be streaming (PBSs site) is what is baffling me.

Then might me the virus issue which is not allowing you to do what you want. Just update your antivirus and get your laptop and other computers scanned. Is your antivirus legal?
