New mail icon vanished

The new mail "envelope" icon no longer appears when new mail arrives.
It is not in the system tray when I click "Show Hidden Icons".

When I right-click the "Show Hidden Icons" button | "Customize Notifications", the New Mail icon is not listed under Current Items.
It is listed under Past Items and the "Behaviour" selected is "Hide When Inactive". This behaviour is the same as that selected for the icons under "Current Items" and these do show up in the system tray.

Any ideas for a solution?
Thank you.
jowetb.

Hi,
you need to set it to "always show" http://email.about.com/od/stepbystep...wmail_icon.htm

It works! I set it to "always show" as you suggested. I can't pretend to understand it. It does not "always show". It now shows only when active, which is what we want. What sort of language does Microsoft speak?!................ But thank you Monty 007. The main thing is.... it works.
