popup stopper

I have popup stopper free edition installed in my xp home system.I was having problems with it blocking me when I tried to open a link from within the site and occasionally it would even stop me opening sites. The solution is to depress and hold the ctrl key while clicking on a link or site that will not open in the normal way. This effectively overrides the blocking action of the popup stopping program,I suspect this method will work in most popup stopper utilities.

Many of the alternate browsers come with excellent popup stopping that requires little or no attention.

I agree. IE is one of the ony popular browsers that doesn't have a pop-up stopper, and if you download the newest Google Toolbar, there's no need to download another program.

I have overcome the blocking effect of popup stopper as I said earlier and I find it quite easy to do so by keeping the ctrl key depressed when I click a link from within a site.I guess popup stopper gets confused between a web link I wish to view and a popup advert.I have always used internet explorer and I am quite happy to continue with it.Regards pcfanatic2.

I like IE as well, it really is what 99% of internet is written for. But I also keep Opera and now Mozilla 1.4 on hand for the "underground" work. I never liked having to remember to hold a button so that everything would go as planned. To me, that would be like having my wife hold the choke on my mustang open every time I wanted to start it. The popup stopper in Opera 7 is excellent. I set it to allow only requested pop-ups, and I can go to any site I want without worrying about not being able to close the pop-ups fast enough, but it still lets the ones you want (like license agreements and such) through without a hitch.

Pop!

I've yet to find a good popup stopper. I plan on trying that google toolbar though and maybe even opera 7. But I am just to much of a hardcore IE fan to just give it up like that. thanx for the help though guys...

Here is a pice of thread that I have copied from www.tek-tips.com ( they are the "all knowing" of computer questions )

PS: You will see SpyBot but, you will also notice that there are MANY other things you can safely do to fix your issue.

How to beat your advertising popups & other browser nasties
FAQ608-3482

If you have popups appearing overly frequently, you may have some "adware" on your PC.

Adware, spyware, and browser hijackers are nasty beings, full of fang and poison to irritate, lurking in the dark damp corners of your PC.
You must go into battle suitably armed.

Your first steps in the assault should be to delete your internet browser's cache ("Temporary Internet Files" in IE) and to delete your cookies.

Failing that, the next step is to download an adware removal program. The following are all recommended.

Spybot Search & Destroy

Adaware:

A second cause of popups is ads that target the Windows Messenger Service. These ads are not hosted on your PC, so there's nothing to clean off. You can either setup a firewall (and block the originating IPs or ports 131 and 139), or disable the messenger service completely.

Free personal firewall

Another way to block banners and popups is to prevent them from accessing their own site...you do this by editing your "hosts." file (normally found in the windows directory).

to me popup stopper programs are which evil i would rather live with, either put up with ads, or have to allow this allow that just to get through a web page, to me it is easier to just let the popups live, they popup, i close them, the ones that take forever to load and cover even the start bar are just a alt F4 away from being gone.i have had many problems with my system, web-sites, and programs that access the web because of the blockers.and i too like opera 7 for those warez that file i was looking for moment that we all have from time to time.
