somebody hack my email address
Hi, I just received an email from Nicolas Olivia but her email address is the same as mine.
How can they do that?
I have a pop 3 account from my internet service provider.
What can I do? I was going to block it because it is only disgusting (xxx) spam but I noticed the sender and I realize that I can not block it because the sender address is mine and sometimes I sent emails from my home to myself at the same address.
Thank you

Run a virus scan. Either using your own program or this free on-line scan from TrendMicro.

That is not hacking your email address,, have you heard of a thing called email bombing ? basically, you can go out there and get a software that can scan a range of IP address, then find out if that computer has the SMTP service running or not, furthermore, you can use that machine to relay email all over the world,,, at that point , you can get an email bombing software and generate tones of email, to whoever you want, Also the software allows you to pretend to be whoever you want to be (any email address can be used),, finally, I would say who ever did that, either knows you OR your computer is an open relay so they were having fun with your email address......
to get around open relay issue, remove the SMTP services from your computer and get a good firewall (Norton, Zone Alarm, Tiny personal Firewall......)
cheers

And if you want some deeper technicial information on this particular issue....
You can actually telnet into an SMTP server, HELO <serverhost>
use the RCPT TO:<victim's email>
MAILFROM:<youcan put everything you want>
This is where I'll stop with the explination, basically when the user gets to the MAILFROM: portion you can use email address you want, basically you're spoofing, and I know this isn't a forum for such things as I mentioned, but that's basically what's going on. They are just using a random smtp and just spoofing your address, nothing to be worried about.

yes, those programas are good but in my case I do not want to block my own address.
I am using netscape 7.1 which it has spam blocker that works great.
Thank you

stupid...
If you have a spam blocker as you said (in your last message), then why did you get the spam???
You are mixing everything up so it sounds ilogical....
Think before you write anything...

like I said before the spam that I am receiving it said that is comming from my own email address , so my spam blocker it will not stop my own email address and i will not put my own email address in the spam list. I hope you understand now.
Thank you

yes, it sounds easy but how they do that?
I'm sure this email was not sent only to me, so how can they send them with the return add matching mine and all the other people?. I mean they won't do it one by one.
Anyway I am just curious about it.
Thank you

im not sure but its very very common in those spam mails. often you will see a return address match or be identical to yours so that if you try to see who sent it, you got nowhere
