cannot access www.netflix.com

Has anyone else had problems accessing netflix? I'm running mozilla 1.6 and when I try to access netflix I get the message "The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.netflix.com." I don't have problems with any other site. At first I thought it was my cookie management so I relaxed the settings but still couldn't get on. Also, I know it's not those settings because I have my work machine configured the same way and I can access netflix at work. I thought it might be my router, so I bypassed it but no luck. I've tried on IE 6 and can't access the site that way either. The only thing I can think of is somehow I hosed a setting when I ran HijackThis a month or so back to rid my box of some CWS spyware. But why would it only affect one website? I'm currently running Spyware Blaster and Spybot, could that be the problem? This is getting to be an issue at my house as my pregnant wife is getting tired of going to the video store! Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated?

No problems here - connected to it straight away with IE6. Is it just this site you cant access? It may have been down at the time you tried to access it.

Sorry cant be much more help!

cannot connect to netflix

yup, Can't get to netflix for some reason. I'm behind a router firewall and the other computer can get in on the same firewall. Each of the configuration is identical. I'm wondering if netflix is blocking certain requests? Has anyone experienced the same thing?

Well, knowing just what you hosed with hijack this would help, I don't think it would effect just this one site and savagefamily's system too as he reported not being able to get on too.
This was stated at the netflix site and something that could be wrong on both yours and savagefamily's system, especially since we just went through a time change.

If the problem persists, you may need to check the date and time of your computer system. Java is very date/time sensitive. If your system date/time is unreadable, then you will be redirected to an error page about your cookies not being enabled. To check your date/time:

1. Go to the "Start" menu of your computer
2. Select "Control Panel"
3. Open the "Date/Time" field
4. Verify the date is correct (date and year)
5. Correct date, if needed
6. Click "Apply"
7. "I'm Ready to Try Netflix for Free Now"
(Be careful as to not mess with the date if it's right, certain programs that expire run on your computer's time and date function.)

It doesn't say you be denied access but rather redirected, which could be where the problem comes in at.
Other than this I could not produce a setting that would get me denied access. I have Firefox 1.0 and in tools\options\web features having the option load images's "for the originating web site only" checked, messed with the sites images loading up. Other than that, haven't found a way to be denied access with Firefox or IE 6.

Use another program?

Try using another web surfing program. Netscape can access that site.

Just for the heck of it can you create another user account on your computer and see if you can access it via the other account.

I have been unable to access www.netflix.com for over a week now from ny home computer. The irony is that when I use my work laptop at home connected via a wireless router, I can access the site with no problem. I tried all of fthe alternatives listed below with no success:

1. Cleared temporary internet files and coockies
2. Tried to relax all possible settings of my IE 6.0 and norton internet security.
3. Tried AOL and netscape browsers.
4. Contacted comcast tech support.
5. Contacted netflix tech support.
6. Posted messages in microsoft IE 6.0 newsgroups.

and I'm still searching for solutions whenever I can.

Same Issue

I'm having the same problem with Windows Me and several web sites including Google Mail. I have two computers connected through a router. The one using Windows XP has no problem making the connection. I've tried using both the Netscape and Explorer browser’s and, while the actual message is different, the page can't be accessed.

I don't think it's a firewall issue as I've tried closing the firewall and the same thing happens. I've also tried closing the virus program, again with no change.

I read somewhere that it may be a router issue.

Can anyone shed some light on this for us?

Help finally

Okay so I had the exact same problem. The thing is the solutions you tried may have been causing the problem in the first place. I was not able to access netflix.com or pcmag.com. My computer was the only one on the network that couldn't do it. Two other computers on the network could access those sites, so i was perplexed. I called my cable internet company (Road Runner, Very nice and helpful) and wasn't able to resolve the issue. Then I called the router company (D-Link, worst customer service I have ever had, plan on discouraging everyone I know that isn't a network guru from buying D-link.) Neither could help, so I dove deep in several related searches, and through inductive reasoning, guessing, and divine power, okay just kidding, eventually I got everything up and running smoothly.

The problem:
Using any browser at any settings, still cannot access certain websites, still able to ping the website through the command promt, just no browser action

The Cause:
The winsock registry value being modified by either ad/spy ware or a firewall, you see when the spy/adware was removed from your system, as it should be, the registry values that it modified are still modified, certain ad/spyware specific registry values are removed, but ones such as winsock, remain altered by the malware.

The solution:
First clear all malware. Second turn off/uninstall all firewalls, and even turn off windows firewall. If you are behind a router there is a hardware firewall protecting your pc so there is no need to worry. next you will be editing your registry so for the love of everything back it up first. It is so easy to completely destroy your computer doing this that it is well advised to back it up. Now manually editing your registry is the scariest thing a pc user can do in my opinion, so i recomend a handy little program that i found on line that will fix the problem you have straight away. download winsockfix.zip from http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257
be sure your registry is backed up and then run this program. you will need to restart your computer then do so now. make sure all firewalls are turned off. in my case virus protection was left on, and still worked fine. you dont want your firewall to start up on the reboot, so make sure it is disabled. that worked for me and it seemed we had very similar problems. i hope this works for everyone else. or that anyone else even reads this. remember back up your registry do it. it is simple

best of luck,
Jordan
