Linux logon problem

System Spec
XP Home on C
Mandrake Linux 9.2 nearly on D
AMD Athlon XP 2600+ @ 2100 MHz.
1 GB PC 2700 DDR
160 GB Seagate Barracuda & 80 GB Seagate U Series
MATSHITA DVD-RAM SW-9581
BDV316C 16X DVD-ROM
Matrox Parhelia 128 MB Driving 2 x Hercules Prophet View @ 2048 x 768
Realtek AC'97 Onboard Audio
Blueyonder Cable (UK) @ 1 Mb

My first venture into the land of Linux and everything seemed to go OK, the install did not recognise my Graphic Card so I went with the default settings.

I installed Mandrake Linux 9.2 onto my D Drive.

Rebooted and entered my user name and password OK

At the prompt I typed startx and then got the following error message ...

execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)
giving up
xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error
[mike@localhost mike1$]

What do I do to get to the GUI?

Hi loosechippings. I've recently installed 10 and have ran 9.2. No hitches for me but my hardware is bland.
You will need to get to a command prompt and login as root and run xf86config
This will allow you to setup everything regarding your graphics card and more. Here is more info on it and good luck.

Sounds to me that you may not have gotten a clean ISO image burn. Did you get to install all 3 disk and if you did after you selected all the options you should have booted to a windows like desktop probably KDE. pm me and I'll give you several good links to some very good Linux forums. I have 9.2 also and am loving it. Another thing, if you hit the esc button when it is booting up you will see what is loading and will show either ok or failed. You may have something hanging at boot time.

It is actually a shrink wrapped 2 disk box.

I have just discovered the boot menu, it is very very faint on my screen and illegible, the boot process actually shows the checks and everything is OK.

Weird!

It is working

I changed the boot to Linux from Linux Xyz (cannot read it the text is so feint).

Eventually got Mozilla Firefox loaded and now trying to work out how to install plugins.

I have got most working, the main problem is Flash Player, it has installed to Konquerer but doesn't see Firefox as an installed application.

Big question, how do I install drivers for my graphics card?

I really do want to give Linux a good try but hate to waste a brilliant graphics card that is running at 1024x 768 16 bit colour when I can run it at 2048 x 768 32 bit colour in XP.

From what I see on this post, you may want to stay with default driver,

After brushing up on my Martian grammar I finally realised that those guys were actually modding the drivers.

I will stick to the generic driver.

Cheers Snowmonkey.
