Why don't you use a Mac?
I just wanted to find out why some of you choose to work with an archaic OS like Windows with the bright future of Longhorn (coming out when? 2007 now?) and not a Mac. I am a die-hard Mac user, and I personally can't figure out why someone would want to use Windows (solitaire maybe?). Tell me why you do.

silly question, how about the ease of use, every one supporting it (apart from apple)and cheap parts??? People who own macs are usually cleverer, or have beards and camp in the woods at weekends.
Resources for windows are way more than macs.
I use both at work, a school, macs for musicand audio, pc for everything else.

I have asked myself that very question. I am a Windows User and not a happy one either. Have never used a Mac, but it may be about time. I am at the present time getting ready to purchase a new computer. Am seriously considering an eMac. Any advice?

Emacs are nice. Very nice. If you want power and upgradability, go for something else. A good place to start is mac forums. Good luck.

Well lets see... The PC is cheaper... faster... more applications... all the games... I think MAC ports one or two per year that are even worth using as a coaster... cheaper... I dont have to throw the cd in the trash to eject it... if IT is a career choice owning a MAC will pigeon hole you... did I mention it's cheaper... and oh yes... PC's intergrate perfectly with my iPod. So, I cant think of a single reason why I would want a MAC. Unless I wanted to impress a artsy girl. Nah, never mind that is not a good reason to own a MAC either.
Running:
Dell XPS Gen4 w/
Intel Pentium4 HT 3.6 Ghz & 2GB Ram
Nvidia GTO 6800 256Mb Video
Dual 74Gb Stripped Serial-ATA 10,000 RPM HD's Striped
Dual 22" Flat Panel Monitors
15 Gb iPod
All that and it was still cheaper than a MAC!
 MAC = Poopie

Before I got my Compaq laptop, I seriously considered getting an Apple laptop since I get a discount through my university. There were a number of things that turned me away though.
I do agree that Macs don't have as many problems with spyware/viruses as PCs do, but software for Macs is more expensive, and finding the right software can be a little more difficult since there are more sites for PC software out there.
Then there comes the fact that I would have to learn a new operating system. I used my friend's Powerbook for a full day on some programming work, and I just couldn't get used to the dock and Finder as opposed to the taskbar and Start Menu.
Generally, PC's are more expandable and customizable than Macs. I can go out and get the exact hardware that I want for a price that is much less than it would cost me to get a new Mac. Secondly, it is typically easier to upgrade hardware for a PC than it is for a Mac. On my laptop, I have already upgraded the RAM and hard drive for a very favorable price, and the upgrade was done myself in my house. If I had owned an iBook, I would have to had sent out the laptop to Apple and had them do the upgrade.
Despite the fact that I would have one Apple computer, I would still need to install and anti-virus program on it since Macs can be carriers for viruses for PCs if they network/file-share. No real advantage there since there would definately be PCs on my home network.
Finally, Windows XP is not a bad operating system. All you need for it is a little know-how. I have been running my computer with XP on it ever since XP was released, and I've never had any problems with it.
The best analogy that I can find for the comparison between Macs and PCs:
Macs = cushy luxury cars with automatic transmissions for people who don't want to deal with maintenance.
PCs = Honda Civics with standard transmissions. A little work and TLC and they'll blow anything else out of the water.

Almost bought a Mac as first computer. I would like to try one but they are very expensive here.
Macs are way to proprietary. You gotta have Mac hardware and mostly Mac software although there is a linux operating system that works on Mac (yellow dog).
With the advent of user -friendly and FREE linux operating systems, I see Macintosh and Windows both having to pull up their socks if they want to retain their holds on the market place.

I wouldn't mind having a mac, but if I had one it would be a second computer not as my main computer. The reason i go this rout is because I like building my own custom computers. Not only that I have lost of software for my windows and it is easier to get software for it. I can go to my local store and get software for it. Even when I see a store with Mac apps they have a small selection and a huge selection of windows apps. If I were to go to a Mac, all I would be doing is limiting myself.

I don't see how people can use either, Linux is obviously the superior to all.

I agree. And in any case what do you think mac uses as the back bone of the OS... a crap/degraded version of BSD! Do your self a favor and don't ask questions like that. Why don't I use a MAC? Why use one! Any thing I can do with a MAC I can do better and far faster in Unix or Linux. Now, if I need support for a windows OS I install samba and thats it. If it really comes down to it I can install cross over office and I can use most all windows applacations. Other than that I can build 1 PC windows and 2 PC Linux boxes and still come out cheeper than the MAC! Like WindowsXP.. just because it looks fancy does not good, faster or feature full. But hey.. MAC users love thier mac's! I had one and I really dont care for it.. BLA! Install FreeBSD v5.3 and be at ease knowing you have the real thing!

I have to disagree with this statement, but again, it's a preference thing ultimately. I have been a graphic artist since 1993, and used Macs and PCs equally in screen-printing and sign design areas. I own 10 PCs of varying age (P3@350 to A64 3000+ OC'ed upto 3600+) and two Macs (G3 Beige w/ 466MHz and a Gigabit G4 Dual 450MHz), and though I like building my PCs and using them, I prefer to get work done on my Macs.
I have the same or similar apps for both, and but when using Freehand and Photoshop I prefer the feel of the Mac, even though my best Mac is now five years old (running OS X 10.3)! It's mainly because I've gotten used to the modal-less windows on Macs (whereas if I click on a palette option in Freehand/Win, I have to click back to the doc window to start working again, PITA!). Dreamweaver, though, I prefer to use on XP (MX 2004). Go figure. I also like Office better on my main workstation PC (Athlon XP 1800+) because it's too slow on my old Mac. Email comes into my Mac only (no worries about viruses), but a small HP ePC acts as a server for sharing my dialup connection (yeah, I'm out in the sticks, 20000 ft. from a CO so no DSL for me) and my old HP LJ6MP. I use my Mac as a share for my Canon S820 6-color inkjet (CUPS works great for my Linux machines).
There's no one great machine for everything, but I do tend to use my Mac for working on anything graphic. Although today, I'm downloading GIMPshop to see if I can make Linux work better for me (allows GIMP to behave and look much like Photoshop, see here: http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241 ), and looking at Scribus on Kubuntu is very nice now; they've been busy fixing the UI!
But games? That's what my A64/XP Pro system is for. No ifs, ands or buts, you just can't get the same gaming experience from a Mac or a Linux install. I needs me rally sims, and I haven't seen Cedaga (WineX) working with Richard Burns Rally and a Microsoft FFB wheel... yet...
