Thumbs down win2003 server - problem with internet access on server & client VIA Router

!

Hello to all,

I will be thankful to anyone who could assist me in solving my problem!

I have installed a new 2003 enterprise server with Active Directory, DHCP , DNS components and symantec anti-virus corporate edition.
Connected Aztech Router directly to the server ;

Server IP : 192.168.0.1 Router IP : 192.168.0.5 ,
Configured server IP manually with router as gateway and local ISP In DNS option.
Configured Router with local ISP in DNS option.
and updated win2003 sp1 and antivirus defenitions. Until then it was fine and working.

THE PROBLEM:-

Connected the router and server to the network by a Switch.
Configured Router IP on DHCP .

all clietns got connected with automatic ip from server dhcp. No problems for file and print sharing is also fine. But the problem is INTERNET!

Both server and the wokstaions doesn't connect to internet. sometimes server gets one or two pages displayed. then it shows page cannot be displayed!

if i ping, sometimes it pings
if i tracert, sometimes it goes and reaches the destination.
in both the above cases, sometime i can browse 1or2 pages or i can't browse totally...even if it pings or tracert!!!

Router is Fine ! local ISP is perfect ! coz when i connect the router to any XP pro machine , it connects to the net normal! but it goes wrong! when connected to the SERVER!

Until now i have installed so many servers! with above procedure and it never failed!! i suspect there is something to do with the win2003 sp1 itself!!!!

CAN anyone help me getting my router ON both on server and workstaions!!!!

i really appreaciate!

thx
Basha

Dude, you have litaraly aswered your own question but you don't know about it !!!!!

If your router is your gateway to the internet then why would you run DHCP on the 2003 server ?? sure, it looks like everything is configured properly but you have one too many DHCP server......
Terminate the DHCP service on the 2003 server and enable the DHCP in the router.
you current setting is:

User->2003 server (DHCP Server)->Router / Firewall-> Internet (Since your 2003 server is not a gateway then your user can't get on Internet)

is should like this:

User or Server -> Router / Firewall (DHCP server)-> Internet

Cheers

thx, snowmonkey!

i have mentioned the gateway on DHCP of server 2003, and all my clients gets automatic IP and gateway thru DHCP. That usually works perfect except my scenario?i don't want to use router as my DHCP. I don't have any firewall either.

can you please advise me with the same above option?

In regards to firewall for your network.
All routers by default are firewall, so you have firewall, but is it enough protection for your network ? You have to know what kind of specification you want on your router / firewall ?

If you are looking to get a economy SOHO router then best choice right now is Linksys RV082:

Similar problem

I have the similar problem.
I am using a router (Aztech 600EW)
When I connect to the internet using the router, I can browse websites for a few minutes. After that, I can only browse using IP. For example, when I type www.google.com into the address bar, it says page not found. However, if I type 66.102.7.104 (Google's IP), I can get into the page.
It works perfectly fine with other modems (non-router).

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
