I hear that Gentoo is the best but the hardest to install

Gentoo is not for the impatient. It can take a day or two just to install the base system. It can take an hour just to install a browser with high speed internet.

Gentoo is very demanding with regards to software and upgrading. If you have a screw up be prepared to cry over the loss of many hours of work.

A Gentoo install leaves you with a fine performing operating system as everything is compiled to match hardware.

Gentoo is aimed more at linux gurus. It is not for newbies or the faint hearted.

It is a fairly popular distro with a cult like following. I could not imagine it ever being a windows replacement or a mainstream operating system.

There are a couple of projects based on Gentoo designed to be more user friendly. VLOS is one.

I use Fedora and CentOS personally, but I've heard Ubuntu is the cat's meow as far as ease of use for a noob.

\\\guys \\\nemsis Rooster can't know much about Linux - so let him try a live cd - this runs from the CD-drive and doesn't need installing. With it he can get his internet account logged-in and a few other things like wordprocessing, maybe printing (esp with HP printer).
Ubuntu will mail a neat distro -with two discs:
1) full distro of selected components including Firefox and OpenOffice suite and 2) a live distro to tempt you to load the full thing.

Warning_ I loaded Ubuntu onto a separate HDD - if you load with windows present there can be conflicts and always Back-Up valuable data files.

The live distro prevents you using your CD-rom so any picture files you want to mangle (in Gimp=photoshop) must be introduced separately (eg USB dongle?)
Full install is via an ISO-image be warned this causes much grief...create the working install CD using NERO under your Win OS. It's not easy!
Linux requires the HDD to be partitioned....take care......
The Linux partitioning program is poor and need some patience. However, to feel the quality a live-disro (CD) is very good, if a tad slow.
If you can run the CDrom you don't even need a HDD (so they say!).
There are some issues with Firefox but it's a good basic browser...and all of this is FREE.......so there is little to lose, just be careful with your valuable data.
Cheers..H.

Linux RAM Memory

I have run Live Linux CD with 256M RAM and installed Ubuntu/Linux onto a separate HDD with the same amount of memory.
The memory isn't a real issue IMHO - it may affect graphic speed, but a Live CD is only a "Taster" so you can get some of the honey without the bees stinging you.
When you come to install I think Ubuntu has a lot going for it. They will mail you a pair of CD's I understand. One is Live, Two is the Install, but as I've said even the Partitioning is somewhat oddball. I would rec that you don't dual-boot on your best computer, or do what I have...use a caddy with dedicated HDD - no risk to yr Win files...but you can't easily transfer files...probably not an issue...you could use a USB-pen-drive as temp storage, or write a CD etc.
=Don't mess your Win PC

There is nothing special about Ubuntu. Its popularity is mostly hype generated by its billionare backer. In fact, many distributions outclass Ubuntu easily.

I've been installing and testing every release of Ubuntu for a couple of years now and I always find it "lacking" and buggie.
