Dell M70 and Knoppix

I recently bought a Dell Precision M70 Laptop with Windows XP pro, and I recently discovered that Knoppix LiveCd's and other Knoppix-based systems (Damn Small Linux USB boot, etc) don't work on my laptop. I searched around the net and found out that no Dell M70 works with Knoppix or other media-booting linux distros. When I try to load a knoppix cd I get the "Welcome Screen" that asks me for any variations on installation, but after I go ahead with the default installation the laptop just black screens and freezes, forcing me to reboot. Does anyone know anything I can do to use a bootable media form of linux? Thanks.

The most recent version of Knoppix (version 5) now works with my laptop.

For what it's worth, I'd recommend putting Gentoo on instead. I was initially hesitant myself, owing to the legendary complication of the process, but the documentation / support is *way* better than any Debian-based distro, and much easier to actually use once you get it up and running. And that was three years ago now! As well, I have put it on 4 different laptops since then, all with little to no problems--there are always some minor hassles with the xorg.conf file, and sometimes a minor alsa problem as well, but that's about it.

PM me if you decide to go ahead and want some help.

Cheers!
