For what it's worth, I'd recommend putting Gentoo on instead. I was initially hesitant myself, owing to the legendary complication of the process, but the documentation / support is *way* better than any Debian-based distro, and much easier to actually use once you get it up and running. And that was three years ago now! As well, I have put it on 4 different laptops since then, all with little to no problems--there are always some minor hassles with the xorg.conf file, and sometimes a minor alsa problem as well, but that's about it.
