Unhappy Ubuntu 5.4 - No internet connection

I installed Ubuntu but have no internet connection. Using a Netgear ethernet card with ntl cable modem. I have trawled through all the dialogues but can find no way to enable it. The system recognises the adapter and I entered my ip and dns addresses but still nothing. Help or ideas would be appreciated.

Most linux distros find and configure cable internet connections automatically, including Ubuntu.
It has been awhile since I used Ubuntu (not one of my faves). Did you specify 'dhcp' and 'find ip automatically' ? Do not specify 'static ip'.

Tried all that with no result. I will probably download the latest version and see if that works. Been to the Ubuntu forums but still no resolution.

You could try a "live CD" version - that will check your connection to the web......until you provide your email details they won't work..but I recall that Gnome (desktop) "Live" did reach the internet for browsing. Ububtu also ships with a live CD - whilst there are speed issues it does run without that tedious install process.

I am assuming the connection was OK under windows and that your modem isn't a "windows modem" - ie one that needs win to operate the internals. These were popular in the early days of "dial-up".

My Ubuntu loading was 5.04 and later 5.10 - as I recall both worked OK on the internet (and e-mail when details were supplied).
I don't use Linux anymore as it won't support my Lexmark printer; nor Java, .pdf ......and I don't have any more time for it ......until these issues are make a "click" away.
The Ubuntu forum can be a bit patchy, but they are well-intentioned, I think.

Don't let Ubuntu's popularity fool you. It does have a huge following but it is flawed.

I have several linux distros installed and I have tried most of them at one time or another including the last few releases of Ubuntu.

If you want things to work like java, flash, wireless, multimedia, and 3d acceleration, PCLinuxOS and Mepis are the way to go.
