hey mate,
Im the same as you... a total dimwit when it comes to linux! But since my net connection isnt that fast and i wanted to try it I went and bought a copy on CD. Well actually i bought mandrake 9.1, LinuxInstall, and some other thing call Knoppix which runs entirely through your pcs ram...
Got hold of an old hard drive its about 3 gig and managed to put 9.1 on no probs at all... just boot from CD and you are off!!! Havent really messed around with it too much yet, but it gives u mega amounts of software... i.e. CD burning programme, multimedia stuff for listening to MP3s and watching VCDs. I would recomend it if you just built a pc or want to have a mess about. Cant do any harm can it??!
If you want to private message me or email me we could sort somthing out and i could copy you the disks...
Laters!

Mandrake or SuSE
Redhat is no longer among us If you get the latest (9.0) you will shortly find yourself with a rather unsupported item.
If you want "Redhat", check into Fedora - it is the "breakaway" group from RH that does the desktop versions now. But be warned, Fedora is currently only a beta test OS and NOT a full release.
Slackware is actually not as hard as everyone makes it out to be. And I have installed a few FreeBSD and NetBSD systems so far and if you know slack, BSD is not far off. It is only hard if you are not willing to learn. Just keep in mind, these Distros are not for point and clickers, if you want ultimate ease-of-use, go Mandy or SuSE. SuSE is by far the most polished and easiest to use but is not available for free

Re: Mandrake???
I am also not a Linux veteran, and I want to install it as a secondary OS on my machine. How do I manage this? Also, I heard you can get a free Mail Server with certain versions of Linux. Is this true?
Thanks a lot guys,
Arigoto

You might want to check out Yv2
I have done extraneous testing on 22 major Linux Distributions, Suse,Mandrake,Fedora, and many other well known Branches. You can see the results at
http://www.yoper.com
YV2 is the first Linux distro I have ever been happy with,
and it has increased my office production about 20 %
The Learning curve is short, and if you can burn a cd,
you can install it. Highly recommended for Windows users.

I heard someone mentions that RH is not supported anymore, tell me what do you mean?
just a random question: "are Linux applications allowed to be profitable?" I seen a lot of websites selling Linux stuff.

Redhat is no longer in business, and Mandrake 9.2 and 10 are both 3 disk for the basic free disk, each about 650mb each which are iso burn. If you use cable for internet it will take aproximately 1 1/2 hrs to download. I've downloaded and had minor audio problems with 9.2. Otherwise it was excellent to use. With 10 which I purchased for the extra 4 disk and I've had absolutely no problems with it. I've installed both on my laptop, independantly, with great results.
I've heard others with much slower internet connections say that it took them as much as 24 hours to download.
Good luck with it,,,I really enjoy the change, for something different.
PM me if you want some links to some great Linux forums and sites.

Yes quackDoc, you can build your own version of Linux for retail but you'll have to do lot's of research on rules of using the freeware and learn much about building your own kernals and everything else from scratch.
