Question Problems on shut down in Mandrake 9

Hi all

Just installed Mandrake 9.0. It went like a dream!
But..... When I try to shut the computer off, I get the light blue screen which shows all the 'shut-down' actions, followed by the last line which says - Shut Down. At this point the computer seems to freeze and stayes powered up. No button or key (including the 'Power' button) seem to work. The only way out is to press the 'reset' button followed by the power button, before the computer boos again.

I am running KDE in my sessions. Any Ideas?

Tzobal

Does the shutdown script show any errors? Does it do the same thing in Gnome? Do you have power management in bios disabled? Have you updated the system via contro panel? What file system are you using? If you are using the stock ext, forced shutdowns and reboots will damage the OS soon. Here are some common commands you can try.
1. alt - ctrl - f2 log in and type halt, shutdown or reboot and hit enter.
2. alt - ctrl - backspace will reboot the os.

I believe alt+control+backspace restarts the X server rather than rebooting the OS.

CTRL+ALT+DEL does a restart actually, I guess they borrowed that from M$.

open a terminal and login as root - or type "su" and enter the root password (if one is set for root)

type this command

modprobe apm

This will load the Advanced Power Management module (driver) that is responsible for shutting the system down.

Also do as mentioned and double check the bios settings. Another prob is ACPI - check out your /etc/lilo.conf file and be sure that you disable the ACPI - there is an easy way to do this in the "mandrake control center" Under the "boot loader" section - be sure to disable the ACPI.

If the modprobe apm works, you can simply add that command to the end of the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file so it is loaded everytime you start the PC

Also when it is booting up you might want to press the esc key which will show whats being loaded. Make sure everything is flagging ok. Your problem may be something that isn't getting loaded properly so it won't sutdown properly either.
