Question Software Issues with Mandrake 9

Hi there,

I have Linux here sitting by my side, but not sure about installing it yet, I'm quite confident in regards to hardware since virtually all my parts are recent and popular. However my main concern is the oftware compatibility, mainly games. I heard there is a program that let's you play games not normally supported by Linux but not really sure what it is, where to get it, or how to use it.

If someone could please clarify this for me I'd be very grateful, thanks.

Transgaming Wine or not?

Is Transgamaing WineX really better for gaming or will normal wine work just as well?

Transgamings winex includes something the normal wine does not - DirectX support. And wine - unlile other "emulators" is not an emulator, it simply creates the same compatability layer that XP/2000/NT do to run apps/games [natively].

The bright side is: winex is constantly updated to (officially) support all the latest games, the downside is that it costs a monthly subscription to get.

Another note is that most do not realise their UT and UT 2003 already supports linux out-of-the-box. So will UT 2004 and a handfull of other developers starting next year.

But genrally, you want to go with winex for gaming.

One thing to keep in mind is Linux seems to have a lot of problems with sound.. If you look through the various Linux groups there are a lot of issues there. I myself have been fighting with this for months on my laptop, but laptops are a whole other issue. Everything else is great, no complaints and I really enjoy my Linux Mandrake 9.2.
