How to set up Linux on computer step by step

Dear,

I am in charged of IT in a High School. I have studied about Linux within one month. I like to get a book or a document as User Guide of Linux Installation or training manual. If anyone have any written document of installing Linux (Redhat, Ubuntu, SuSe,...), please send me a copy of it (via email or website). I need a detailed guidance that I can do by myself on my computer. I think if it is confidential, please, pardon me.
Thanks advance

Thyen

There's nothing confidential about installing linux... Google "ubuntu install", there's even sites with screenshots of the ENTIRE installation process.

Why does everybody suggest Ubuntu?

There are many different versions about, thyen. For the definitive linux site that may have a particular type suitable for you: http://distrowatch.com/
It is usual for each distribution to be accompanied by a guide. Sometimes two. Download of such a guide will be free, usually.

Thy Yen,
Have you ever known about Hacao, a Vietnamese version of Linux?
Just use it.

Hey Thyen,
Ubuntu is most popular distro of linux and is widely used it is freely available with both community and professional support.
Ubuntu includes more than 16,000 pieces of software, but the core desktop installation fits on a single CD. Ubuntu covers every standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to web server software and programming tools.

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy will help you a lot.

Thumbs up All Linux is Good

Please don't preach about Ubuntu being the definitive Linux as all Linux is good, but some are more user friendly than others, disk contented is right to suggest distrowatch.
I personally use dual boot xp pro and Fedora core 8 (soon to be 9,when I get round to installing it).
I have also used suse, red hat,and about 28 different operating systems including Debian all of which are good if you know how to use them.
For ease of use and ready to go packages I would recommend Fedora Core,I have tried Ubuntu fiesty and found it lacking in its packaging to be honest so let the individual make up their minds as to what they require from distrowatch as although we have a range of experience with this operating system a newcomer to Linux needs it all done for them and lets face it if they need to ask about it they are newcomers.
FC8 does it step by step and has full documentation as was asked for in original thread ,my 11 year old has installed it successfully and uses it daily to play Nexuiz and do his school wok on.
If you wish to view documentation in regard to this distro go to fedora core and as with all GNU distros it is freely available for your scrutiny, good luck with whichever distro you finally decide on ,its all good with Linux.

The best endorsement for linux I've ever seen.
I'm going to dual boot FC9 myself. I might be drawing on your experiences, Embolism.

Thumbs up

No problem, always happy to help in anyway I can.
Linux and Microsoft are now in discussions over further joint development as they have in the past with Suse (Novell) ,hopefully the Microsoft people will get some tips on releasing better operating systems in future as from my experience of Vista they have done exactly as they did with xp and released an incomplete and untested O/S yet again with an extortionate price tag.
Linux is free and rock solid with 10`s of 1000`s in applications ,also free under the GNU license.
The fedora Core project Linux is very good for dual booting and has full NTFS support so no need to shutdown and reboot ,as you can access other operating system and use both operating systems from one desktop.
Unlike Debian there is no need to compile packages and there is regular updates that keep functionality at peak in both applications and security.
Installation is also easy, load windows first and then Linux, the anaconda partition manager will recognize windows and will also give you a choice of which O/s you wish to boot by default,as well as giving you a visual boot screen at start up so that you may switch to other O/S.
If you need further help than offered by documentation and I can help I will. (:^D)

Tried on my lappy. The saga.....

I dual booted, installed. My display won't run at native resolution. Touchpad taps are not recognised.
Searched for a display driver on Nvidia. Downloaded it. The file ends in "pkg.run". Ok, I assume it's a self installing package. Wrong! I have to use the command line. *thinks* Your not serious?
Open a console, copy the Nvidia provided command line entry.... File not found. Ahh! Of course not, the download directory isn't the shells current dir. Direct sh to the file location... Wrong permissions! *sigh*
With that I rebooted back to XP, deleted the fedora created partitions, rebooted to win 98 floppy, fdisk /mbr. Sanity restored.

Linux command line is a constant source of annoyance on every distro I've tried when all you want is to get the job done. Don't get me wrong, CLI is a cool resource, I used it a lot in my Amiga days, but this is just a driver install. Why all the red tape?

Maybe next time.

Thumbs up (read docs on disc :)

Basically do this
Go to livna.com and go to fedora 9 repo ,install gpg key and install livna display config it is self explanatory-but there is a read me step by step.
Using yum in terminal.once you have repo key from livna its all easy >add and remove packages, codecs, vlc player, xine and all free games and apps. (:^D).
As with most things its simple when you know how. ps have installed FC9 and its sweeeeet.
Nvidia drivers install and switching is documented on livna start page, can be done in yum or through terminal with legacy drivers from Nvidia.

Next time show a little patience as Nvidia are not proprietary drivers like ATI and Nvidia drivers won`t load automatically until you have the repo key, whereas ATI have legacy drivers built into the distro, this is the same for all linux not just fedora core.

Hmmm, I never read win docs but it didn't stop me.

Bearing in mind I was trying it, and yes, I didn't give it much time, but CLI from the word go? This is exactly the sort of thing linux has to overcome if it's to succeed.
You have to get your hands dirty straight off. You can see just from this board that Linux has an uphill struggle. In the most polite was, It's still an "enthusiasts" OS.

I will try your advice E

It isn`t a Linux problem ,windows doesn`t come with Nvidia drivers either they are downloaded via web or disc as they are in fedora ,the only difference is that you have to install display config it isnt a biggy ,click the link and install ,copy and past into terminal a couple of lines of script to activate ,once installed yum extender keeps it and your whole system up to date with all applications.
install the fedora 9 gpg key and just add and remove anything in repository, games, applications, dvd recording, codecs to comix.,etc. auto updates, free anti virus, commercial firewall, full office suites, not to mention some of the 30,000 other stable packages out there.

Apply to me via pm with email addy and I will send you screenshot of my install ,it looks good and runs good.
If you are not capable of terminal I would use suse as it has Nvidia support on disc and graphics were in collaboration of Novell and windows.
Although package management isn`t as good as red hat -fedora releases.

For those of you with laptops or systems with Nvidia cards not enabled at boot run with predefined resolutions using cheat code at boot as outlined in docs on disc,640x480,800x600,until you have installed required gpg key and switched over driver then choose standard resolution on reboot, saves uninstalling everything and wasting lots of time .
Linux isn`t a noobs operating system and unless you are prepared to work a little to achieve a lot ,then don`t bother, remain in the secular world of windows and stay click and point forever.
Most issues with Linux revolve around the Nvidia install and for those who persevere Linux is its own reward.Which is why about 90% of on-line servers are actually Linux and are the longest running and most secure of web servers, some running for years before reboots.
Also why windows who started by monopolising the whole internet some years back are now working in collaboration with Linux,as in the world of computing only Linux is Agrigous and leaders in the future development of the internet and computing, truly by the people for the people-open source.( @sourceforge.net) don`t be sheep be Penguins......Its Coool.!!
