Just try some live cd`s first.
Linux has many forms, red hat ,fedora core,Ubuntu, blag etc,for the best system try a few live cd`s first most of them will also install to hard drive if you like them.
Blag is a good starting point for the novice , to install type blagblagblag after boot screen and it will auto configure partitioning and install itself.
Ubuntu will do just about the same as will fedora core as they are all linux with a slightly different look, all of them are good and they only vary in their start up apps and appearance.
Check them out and before deciding on which to use and take a look at their documentation.
I personally dual boot with XP pro and Fedora core 9 ,but for your level (introductory) would try just booting fedora core9 or Ubuntu to get a feel for the operating system. If you do decide you want to dual boot xp and linux install XP first and partition in NTFS as linux now recognises NTFS and not just fat volumes.
DO Not expect everything to fall from heaven and do itself there is small sections of reading to be done ,it is simple enuff as my 11 year old has already installed and configured FC9 with dual boot ,so if you feel that its beaten you ,consider that an 11 year old can do it. (:^D)
