Linux vs. Windows

Yeah, I don't like Lindows at all, it just gives Linux a bad name. Always running as root, and costing alot are big problems, but the worst is how much they are trying to be like Windows. The beauty of Linux is that it is NOT like windows. They also claimed to be more compaitble with windows than they really are.

Mandrake 9 is great.

Yeah, I see what they're trying to achieve though, something built on linux that looks like windows. Some people are not ready to go straight to linux and lindows may be the solution for them.

I personally, don't want something that imitates (or looks like) windows - I want something different.

Distros like Lindows, Lycoris, and Xandros are more for people who really don't want to learn Linux, just use an OS that doesn't crash or get virii. People who want to get started with Linux will probably go with Mandrake.

I just ain't sure about the whole Lindows "thang". Correct me if I am wrong, but from what I can tell (which ain't much, 'cause I ain't very Linux aware) It is almost as locked down as windows, and the argument about free programs for linux does not apply to lindows because you have to pay a $99 per year subscription to get any programs that are "compatible" (correct me again, please! it is my mom's computer, and I don't spend enough time at her house to know better) and worth a piss. I know of linux, and it sounds like a great idea, but I think that most people are like me, and didn't grow up learning the art of the command line interface, and are afraid of it. and to do anything cooler than you can do in the guest user account in windows xp, you have to know something. maybe one day.....

Pretty much, yeah. If you want a Windows replacement, try either Xandros or Lycoris. If you want to learn Linux, try Mandrake.

Personally I think that the whole Lindows thing is great. Their OS may not be that good but it can serve as a bridge for newbies who want to switch to Linux. And above all it's getting more and more media attention, meaning that Linux is getting more media attention, now more people know about linux. A couple of years ago you can go into a forum and say something about linux and people would say "Linux? Is that a program or something?"

I wasn't meaning to trash Lindows in my last post, just to give my opinion as to why I think Linux in general will be a little slower to catch on as most would like. I do think that Microsoft has more than their fair share of the market, but it is because they make a product that is hard to beat in the eyes of the whole. Not to sound repetitive, but most people (including me) are not very savvy with the use of command lines. I am, however, thinking of trying Knoppix. From what I understand, the OS is made to run directly off the CD, which would save a headache from the long partition and install process. But it looks like you still have to do some tinkering to get the OS to recognize your drives, plus I would think that it would be very slow. But I am willing to give it a try, and it seems like the path of least resistance.

Its my opinion that linux must appeal more to the masses if it is to succeed. I applaud Lindows, Licorice, Yoper, etc. These windows - like os let people get their feet wet. Lets face facts - we like the challenge of linux as something new and ground - breaking. But most people just want to get goin with no fuss or bother - they dont want to install nvidia drivers to get 3d acceleration, they dont have time to learn vi and vim, and they sure as heck dont want a hassle downloading and installing their fave programs. We get mad at Microsofts bs and politics, but darn, its one heckava os. Dont get me wrong - I love linux - but I love the variety and versatility of Windows.

VIVA LA WINDOWS! ...........at least until they really piss us off and we burn Bill at the stake, and I would say take his daughters, but he doesn't look as if he would produce a quality offspring (not without patches and service packs!)

Curtybob, about Knoppix, I've tried it and it works perfectly fine

There was NO tinkering involved on my part, I didn't even need to use the command line once, it was just up and running. Also, my ADSL connection was recognized after running a nifty utility in the program menu all I had to do for internet functionality was supply a user name and password

But the results may vary vastly with different hardware, good luck and tell me how it goes

Is anyone familiar with Xandros? I keep reading good things about it, but everybody I know uses Windows so I haven't talked to anyone who has tried it.

I've installed Mandrake 9.0 on me other comp and being a noob on linux i was quite surprised on really how easy it was to install,...using the Win interface and playing those cheesy games,and just seeing that what i can do with all those different apps there is nothing that really is difficult to learn about this OS,...im sure that if I had a year or two to figure this out i"d use this Os,...but XP is so much easier,....sure there is spyware and service packs and this and that but ------>so what,....its made my computing time more enjoyable much more than it would Mandrake,...Hey look if it wasnt for Bill Gates this world would be still stuck in the 80's,...
