Hmmmm....
I may be wrong, but how does Lindows get away w/selling their product? I thought that they would have to offer it free. I know that they say you have to pay to become a member, but they don't even offer the basic OS for free. In fact, nothing is free on their site. (From what I read on their site)
Don't get me wrong, I don't expect to get anything in life for free, besides I'm not going to get Lindows anyway, I just don't understand how they get away w/it. Probably some simple answer, huh?
I just got RedHat 8 & it is nice. I am fairly new to it & I am one of those guys that wants to learn that programming stuff, to a certain extent. I do like win XP for the most part & I think Linux & win have their place in life. I will/do prefer to support some other company than MS.
Thanks,

Building your own system is the best way to get a computer.
You dont have to buy a Prefabricated System with Windows on it.
Also, what is so bad about Windows 2000 or XP? You all are bashing it. You cannot bash something you know nothing about.
I was very nervous when I installed Linux (Redhat 9.0) but it seems to be alright, not as user friendly as Windows. I am an advanced computer user, and if I were not, I would not be able to use Linux. The install was easy, except for the partition section. (I used Druid) I wanted to keep Windows XP because I have programs on there that I need to run, for instance, my schoolwork. and Macromedia Products.
anyways, I like Linux and Windows. (there is nothing wrong with that) And I despise mac. but I have not used it so I cannot bash it, however, my Linux does. lol

Just read something on Mandrake Linux... Apparently they are filing for bankruptcy. That sucks.
I personally have Redhat

Well, I stuffed win XP on one of my workstations since my server uses Win 2K Advanced Server. It's awesome, but I want red hat on my workstation as well. I took off linux & put win on first because I had an uneasy feeling that win would do something bad.
Anyway, after all that's been said. What would be your advice for best installing linux on the same machine, same hard drive? I made sure that I made my drive several partitions so that linux could easily install. I tried once very quickly. I stuffed the RH CD in & I booted, but it wouldn't let me install. So, what would be the best way to not corrupt the existing windows install, but allow me to have a good install of RH?
Thanks Guys,

The part of the installation thats going to determine where Linux resides in relation to windows is the partitioning. Partitioning is a really simple concept really, it deals with sections of your hard drive, called partitions. For example I have an 80gigabyte hard drive with 3 partitions on it. One has 14 gigs, one has 25 gigs, and the other has the rest, about 40 gigs. Your hard drive will need a partition for windows, and one for linux. Do you know how your hard drive is partitioned? If you have 2 partitions, which might show up as a C drive and D drive on windows, your in luck, just clear everything off the D drive and put what you need on the C drive, and you should be able to easily format the D drive and install Linux onto it. If your whole hard disk in one partition, you will have to shorten that partition and make room for another. There's plenty of software available that can do that for you, partition magic is a popular one. Either way, its a good idea to *Backup everything you can't afford to lose*. Its safe to do it that way. I'm saying it again, *Backup everything you can't afford to lose*, I've known people who didn't and wished they had. Once you have a partition for windows, and a partition for linux, disk druid will be able to do it all for you. But it might be a good thing to read up a bit on the basics of Linux partitioning before you begin with redhat. With Mandrake its even easier though, partitioning is a cakewalk that even a computer illiterate could easily do.

I'm making my own tower atm...
It has a 3gb hard drive and a 16gb harddrive
My brother keeps insisting on me installing Win2000pro but I want Linux... my workstation will be on a LAN with a router (freesco) that looks like unix anyway, and my hosting server is unix- so why not a workstation as well with Linux?
I have sort of crashed and burned around the cryptic side of some Linux OS... but I want a GUI as well. What's best for me? I'm really a newbie for Linux.
My brother has all the editions of RedHat Linux from 6.0 and up, he has Mandrake, slackware, freeBSD all on CD... what is best?
If I have a browser (I use Opera already), something to run the IMs (MSN messenger, yahoo, ICQ, AIM) like Trillian I suppose and some form of document making program then I'll be fine Also, I have a program for my CD burner - nero5 burning rom with nero 5.5.8.3 - is there a Linux substitute?
I was thinking maybe put both win2000pro and Linux on this tower? I do have a win2000pro disc at home I suppose if Linux isn't what I want and I end up formatting...

heh..
Before i even address linux vs windows in this post i will tell you, i did not bother to read all the replys as i am just gunna post my own view anyway, i myself use xp/nt/slackware/freebsd/ and slackware-live, i will just state some facts first of all before i let my opioin take over and start ranting..
NT for me is more secure than freebsd, i know alot of you will be thinking i'm on drugs for saying that, but i'll explain why! first of all we all know what POSIX is right?? for those of you who dont this will be a VERY broken down explaination POSIX is defined as a set of standards to see what OS's could call themselfs *nix ok? well NT was rated a POSIX.1 subsystem which leaves freebsd lurking behind, i could be really bold and say NT is more *nix than fbsd, but i wont lol! granted it's windows based POSIX but from my point of view it's still POSIX and it's still granted also NT offers finer graded DAC controls... Segregated users.. i could rant all day!! anyway i myself personaly use slackware and love it, but i love to study windows security because it's great
here are some very useful *nix based programs
Msn client - http://amsn.sourceforge.net/msn.htm
Aim client - http://gaim.sourceforge.net/
Yahoo client - http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/download/unix.html
ICQ - http://www.miranda-im.org/
CD burning software - http://www.xcdroast.org/
Office utils - http://www.openoffice.org/
Window manager - http://www.fluxbox.org
Gimp(graphics editor) - http://www.gimp.org/
Xchat(GUI irc client) - http://www.xchat.org
Irssi(text mode irc client) - http://www.irssi.org
and there is lots more, post what you want linux todo and i'll direct you to the correct software

My server...
Current uptime: 7 months, 2 days, 1 hour, and 37 minutes.....
It is a dual Xeon 800 running Slackware 9.1. It has Apache web server, FTP server, acts as a firewall for my LAN, runs a DHCP server, file server (for windows boxes) and will let me surf the web while burning a DVD - without a single hicup
My "Play box"
SuSE Linux 9.0 Pro, on a Celeron 800 mhz box with 392 megs RAM, an nVidia Geforce 4, and Soundblaster audigy. It is used as my entertainment bos in the livingroom - 5.1 audio and everything
My "Den" system:
Intel P4 3.01 Ghz with 512 megs DDR, an nVidia GeForce 4 FX, and SB Audigy 2 platinum. Dual boots with WinXP Pro and Debian. I have installed the windows part twice now as a result of freinds DLing stuff they shouldn't.

Here's on for you...Go to your konsole and type "top" (without the quotes). It's like the XP task manager and will give you a performance percentage of all running processes...You'll be amazed to see it's about 80% less then any Windows operating systems. Mine is averaging about 12% of my memory.
So how ya like-a-me now??
