Unhappy Norton internet security firewall pop-ups

Hi.

Win XP home and Norton Internet Security Norton firewall and anti virus).

I get continual messages from the firewall every few minutes, sometimes half a dozen in immediate succession, which are pop up windows from Norton which read "Program control, High Risk, A remote system is trying to access your computer". I click "Block", and check the tick box "always use this action" and it goes away, but often another is behind it. I am forever needing to do it, dozens of times an hour sometimes, all day.

My Norton firewall is configured as "custom" because the default recommended settings stop me getting any internet access. I don't know why. I Use XP home and NTL broadband. The firewall settings now read "medium: block only known trojans". Java Applets and active X allowed. I have checked a tick box "Alert when unused ports are accessed". (Un ticking this does not prevent the regular pop-up messages).

I can't find anything at all on the Norton site which is remotely helpful.

This is really irritating, rather than damaging, but any ideas on the set-up please let me have them in non-geek language.

Thanks,

Justin

I suspect that you're running something (a program) in the background that wants to get on the internet (an update, maybe?). The next time that you get the message check to see what program is trying to call out. Dispite Norton's warning that the access is "High Risk", you may want to let it do what it's programmed to do.

Or, you might be able to turn off the feature in the program itself. One example of this is Microsoft Works which by default checks for updates every time you connect to the internet. The option can be turned off within Microsoft Works.
