Word 2002 and list numbering alignment

I can not figure out how to get my numbers to line up when they go from 1 digit to 2 digits.

I am doing a list of numbered instructions/steps. Once it goes from 9 to 10 the 9 is over the 1 and not the 0.

I have tried everything and can't figure out how to get it to line up. Any help would be appreciated. I am using styles for this.

I think I understand what you mean, if not this will be completely wrong.

I take it you are using Bullets to number your instructions?

With the document open ...

Format > Bullets and Numbering > Numbered > Customize > Number Position - Select Right from the drop down list > OK.

The 9 should now be above the zero in the figure 10.

Thanks!

After messing with it until midnight last night I finally figured it out. I was doing the right align, but then my number was so far from the text it looked funny. I finally messed with the numbers enough that it looked right.

Now my issue is the numbering not chaning as I do numbering elsewhere in my document. I have found many articles on list numbering and they all basically say that numbering in word is very unstable and unreliable. This does not make me hopeful.

I think I have found something that will work. I means having to make several styles though.
