Adware fails to delete in Norton Anti Virus

Hi I was hoping somebody might be able to tell me why the 162 adware threats that keep showing up on my Norton Anti Virus always come up as delete failed. I have checked and I can't tell if they are in the restore files, some are in temp files some are in documents and settings. Etc. I downloaded AdAware and thought it successfully deleted some of the ones Norton found, I had not rebooted at the time, but did the scans directly following one another. I even did adaware again after norton, and found only two new threats. I know some are part of the license agreement of some downloaded programs but I have deleted most of the ones I know of, and don't know how to tell what is attached to what...
