Question windows media player problem

Hi all
My windows media player has a wierd problem. When I play an mpeg movie, the screen goes black and I can't see the actual movie. It's strange because I can hear everything but I cant see anything.

I was worried so I re-installed windows and I couldn't believe it, I still had the same problem. Maybe its a computer problem, I dont know. Please if anyone knows what's wrong, please help me.

Thanks

The first thought that comes to mind is that you lack the required codecs. Do you receive a message saying that you do not have the codecs required?

Temporary Solution

I have the same problem and have only found a temporary solution to it. While watching the file and the screen goes black, and you still hear sound I have found that if you make the player go into Skin mode, then back into full mode and continue to do this until the video comes back. Yes this is a real pain to do, but at least its something for the meantime, I have also upgraded my codecs and the problem still remains. Any extra help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey - Try going in to Windows Media Player and go to tools and then plugins. Uncheck the movieffecter plugin and if that doesn't work uncheck all of the plugins. My computer did the exact same thing and is fixed now.

good luck

It could be an issue with your graphics card - check overlay is switched on. Check other properties out also (right click desktop navigate to properties and check out the settings there) you will need to go to advanced settings. I will warn you however you can mess things up if you are not carefull so take a note of what you change and should you get in to real problems you will have to boot up in safe mode and put the settings back to where they were.

Make sure you know how to go in to safe mode just in case you mess things up.

It appears that you have your display settings configed wrong. Te issue you are remarkingon is the overlay notdrawing on your screen. Check to make sure you have directx accel turned on and hardware accel as well as hardware support for the monitor you are tryingtouse. Windows is a bit flaky with htese things. You can try using media player classic. It will allow you to work with the settings more easily. It has it's own codecs/filters built in. You can adjust the display options and see what the issue is. Also, be safe... do not EVER install those codec paks. They are useless. and DANGEROUS... Install just the codecs you need. To see if any ofyour codecs are 'broken' try this, use G-Spot,it will show you all the codecs in your system, and display any that are 'broken' in red. You may also have installed a codec that does not allow orlike your overlay settings,or even possibly a non vfw codec that will not display under winmedia player, only with other players. Which?, you've got to play and find out which will work.
easiest is to use G-Spot.

luck

My Windows Media Player does not work. WMP 10 was installed with the same problem, then I install WMP 11 and still the same problem, it just don't want to work, and I get everytime the same message "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help" I have posted this under Media Aidio Controllers perhaps the wrong place. Can somebody please help me with this ongoing problem.
