Make sure you know how to go in to safe mode just in case you mess things up.

It appears that you have your display settings configed wrong. Te issue you are remarkingon is the overlay notdrawing on your screen. Check to make sure you have directx accel turned on and hardware accel as well as hardware support for the monitor you are tryingtouse. Windows is a bit flaky with htese things. You can try using media player classic. It will allow you to work with the settings more easily. It has it's own codecs/filters built in. You can adjust the display options and see what the issue is. Also, be safe... do not EVER install those codec paks. They are useless. and DANGEROUS... Install just the codecs you need. To see if any ofyour codecs are 'broken' try this, use G-Spot,it will show you all the codecs in your system, and display any that are 'broken' in red. You may also have installed a codec that does not allow orlike your overlay settings,or even possibly a non vfw codec that will not display under winmedia player, only with other players. Which?, you've got to play and find out which will work.
easiest is to use G-Spot.
