WMP Codec

I am running Windows XP Pro will all updates except sp2 and I have 512 mb RAM. I am using Windows Media Player 9.

I have installed codecs from DivX. In WMP, I have selected ALL and avi does show as a selected format.

I have downloaded some avi tutorials which will only play the audio part of the files and the video part. When the files are being opened in WMP, it says there is an error in downloading the codecs.

I know there are 100's of avi codecs. I have looked at the file properties and it says the Audio format is CCITT u-Law. In the Video properties it showes only a frame rate and data rate, but no format.

Is there any way to tell which codec I need and where to get them??
