Outlook Express attachment-can't open

Suddenly many attachments to e-mail sent to me can't be opened. When I click on the paper clip the file names or discriptions appear. Many, but not all are greyed out. Some just show a title or discription of the file without indicating the file type.

Could it be that my computer doesn't have a reader for that file type? I use XP Home and the files I can see that don't work have been such as .eml,.wps.

Is there any setting in OE 6 that can be changed to help my problem.

I can think of a couple of possibilities:

In Outlook Express>Tools>Options>Security tab, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" is checked (some Windows updates will re-enable that even if you've turned it off). If so, uncheck it.

Your anti-virus program is blocking access to the attachments either because it's set to automatically block certain file types or it found viruses in the ones that cannot be opened.

I'll try the first idea. May be awhile before I know if that's the problem. I believe if it was my anti-virus I would have gotten a message that an attachment was stripped, at least I think I recall that in the past.
