Smile PerfectDisk

Second that about PerfeckDisk. The new version 5 is the greatest for W2K & XP. My NT required a different version, but the older 3.5 version works fine in NT.

I agree about PerfectDisk but an update check of my Personal Edition v4.0 says that it is the most recent version. Where did you find v5.0?

I just checked the sight and I guess the PE (Personal Edition) version maxs at v4.0 while the full featured version gets the new upgrade.

I used the freeware addition of the O&O Degrag 2000 Pragram from http://www.oo-software.com/, instead of the standard M$ Xp program, but I'm currently using the Speed Disk defrag program that comes along with Norton Utilities.
I've never used Raxco Perfectdisk, and i'd be interested in your views on weather it would compare with Speed Disk?

Cool PerfectDisk

jack daniels 23: I'm not the one to compare PerfectDisk to anything from Norton. Get a trial copy of PerfectDisk and test it out. I learned my lesson about installing "anything" from Norton years ago. If you can't find a trial copy, email me and I'll send you an older version to try. I did use "Norton's NT Disk Utilities" for NT in the past but disabled everything but Speed Disk and it worked fine. I now use Perfect Disk 3.5 in NT but have never compared the two defragers. Norton products are about equal to "Eggplant" on my food menu-----erased!

It's curious that no one is mentioning the defragmenting tool built into Windows. I wasn't aware until recently that Windows NT didn't have a defragmenting utility included but Windows 2000 did (and of course XP does). What do others think of the included "disk clean" and "defragmenter" tools in Windows.

Also, I'm curious what others think about defragment tools for RAM. They claim to reclaim "wasted" memory.

Glad to run across someone else who doesn't like eggplant.

Smile W2K/XP Defrag

There is nothing wrong with the built-in defrag programs except that their SLOW and do NOT defrag your Pagefile. PerfectDisk does defrag all pagefiles. I have six pagefiles on different scsi hard drives, and PerfectDisk will defrag all of these if I select the drives to be done. Also you can select multiple drives to defrag with PerfectDisk and walk away---their all done at the same time. You can select which drive you care to monitor (one at a time). I can defrag 168GB's of scsi drives in about an hour. I've never used it on an IDE hard drive, but will in the future since I now have a WD1200JB in an external IDE/USB enclosure for photos and dvd movies. There are other defrag programs out there, but for the price I'm very happy with Raxco. If someone still runs NT, be careful, Raxco has a seperate program for NT, and it won't work in W2000/XP.

windows defrag is pretty poor. I used to use speed disk but now i've jumped ship.
BTW, xp can defrag multiple volumes at the same time.

Cool XP Defrag

Thanks: I didn't know that XP's defrag would do multiple drives at the same time. Maybe someday Raxco could buy Roxio's ECDC and fix it properly for XP before Nero leaves it in the dust. (Wishfull thinking?).

Well, as usual, the built in apps are for the masses.
If you want the real power, you go third party.
As the saying goes, if you want a job done, do it yourself.
