Outlook.exe process doesn't close

Hey everyone,

I'm wondering about a little tiff I'm having with Outlook 2003 SP1.

Has anyone else had the situation where you go to run Outlook, do your thing, and then close Outlook, only to have the OUTLOOK.EXE process still running. If you try to run OL again, it starts up a new OUTLOOK.EXE process.

Has anyone else had this problem, and does anyone know a fix? M$'s KBs aren't any help, and the M$ newsgroups are just crap when it comes to anything Office.

Thanks in advance.

Quite a few things will cause this

>>Com Add-ins

1. Open Outlook and go to Tools, then Options.
2. Click on the "Other" tab and then click on "Advanced Options."
3. Click on the "COM Add ins" box.
4. Make note of any add-ins that are checked, then uncheck them.
5. Close outlook, kill the process in Task manager then open and close it
to see if the issue is resolved.

>>Caching mode for Exchange

1. In Outlook go to Tools, Options.
2. Click on "Mail Setup" then "Email Accounts."
3. Highlight the Exchange server and click "Change."
4. Uncheck the box labeled "User cached Exchange mode."

>>Spyware

Various spyware programs can cause this run a spyware scanner

>>Installed Applications that cause this
Citrix clients.
Spamsubtract from Intermute
Freedom Firewall by HP
Blue Tooth drivers
WinFax Software
Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.

And of course microsofts take

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have any COM addins for Outlook at all, and indeed, the temporary solution of killing the Outlook.exe process in question does the trick, but it keeps coming back everytime I reboot.

I don't use an Exchange server, so that's out.

I scan with Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly (every 2-3 days), and nothing came up just now.

I have my NOD32 setup to scan incoming and outgoing e-mail, but this problem cropped up recently, and I've been using NOD32 and OL together for a while now.

I just did a fresh install now, and I haven't had this pop up since. Thanks for the info anyways.

Regarding this and other problems I've had...

I ran CWShredder, and it found an entry of the CWS.Outlook entry on my computer... Haven't had the problem since.

Cheers!

thanks

The suggestions above helped me with multiple OUTLOOK.EXEs running and comsuming much of my machine over time - all due to a new COM ADD-IN courtesy of ITUNES v7.xxx

Exclamation it was iTunes!!!

I've been having this problem on 2 out of 7 machines at my office. I've been trying to figure this out for 3 months! It was a conflict between iTunes and Microsoft Outlook Inbox. See for yourself: if you leave Outlook open, go to your control panel, add/remove programs, and uninstall iTunes --- you will get an error message that in order to proceed, you must close Microsoft Outlook Inbox!!!
