Problem With Outlook Express

Hi Folks,

I need a bit of help with a fault that has developed with Outlook Express.

Occasionally when I open OE I get a window entitled "Logon-pop.freeserve.com. This asks me to enter my username and password. However these are already entered in the appropriate fields. When I click on OK I get an error message stating "there was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your password was rejected..........etc.

When I close down the original window I have no access to my e-mails.

On checking the pop.freeserve.com properties window I notice that my incoming mail (POP3) is shown as 127.0.0.1 when it should be pop.freeserve.com. I therefore amend the window to read pop.freeserve.co.uk and apply the changes. Outlook Express then continues to work normally.

The problem however reoccurs intermittantly during the day and I have to apply the same procedure all over again.

This seems to happen especially after I add any new hardware or software to my PC. OE develops this fault following system reboot.

I contacted my ISP (Wannado) and they said that it must be a software problem with OE and that I should try reinstalling it. I can report that I tried reinstalling OE but that this did not cure the problem.

I also scanned my PC for possible viruses using McAfee and no infected files were found. I have windows SP2 installed with all their additional security features activated (anti-virus, firewall...etc). I also have McAfee's internet security suite installed on my PC. This is fully up to date with all security features running. I do not therefore believe this fault to be the result of a virus.

This problem is really annoying and I am anxious for a solution. I recently had a major upgrade carried out on my PC (e.g. faster processor, new graphics card, new motherboard...etc). The PC is working great apart from this annoying fault.

Has anyone any idea what is causing this problem and what can I do to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards.

Satfanni.

It's your antivirus scanning incoming email that is causing your problems

Turn off McAfee's email scan

Does turning off email scanning leave me vulnerable to viruses?

Disabling email protection does not leave you vulnerable to viruses and malicious software in email. It is a separate layer of protection Virus detectors scan any incoming files, including email, as they are saved to your hard drive. As long as you keep your virus definitions up to date and set to scan files as they are created or downloaded, your system is fully protected.

Many thanks bbeard67. I will take your advice. As far as I know McAfee is set to auto update on virus definitions. I will also carry out manual searches for updates.

Thanks again.

I tried your suggestion. I disabled the McAfee e-mail scan.

This has not however helped. Still having the same problem which normally occurs following a reboot of system.

Any other ideas?

Regards.

McAfee's Security Suite includes a software firewall. You don't need both the McAfee and the XP firewalls and having both of them running may be the source of the problem.

Choose which one you like, disable the other and see if that helps with the email problem.

While trying to fix this problem did you create another account with the same settings check to be sure you don't have duplicate accounts

Also do you have any other Security apps like NetGuard which also causes this problem

Thanks for the replies guys.

There is only one account showing for mail in OE when clicking on tools, accounts and mail. This shows my default account pop.freeserve.com. I presume from this that no second account has been created.

I will disable the windows firewall as suggested and see if this helps.

I'll keep you posted.

Once again thanks for the help.

Hi Guys,

I disabled the XP firewall as suggested but still having the same problem.

The error number I get is 0x800CCC92.

I have been to the Outlook Express error troubleshooting site and have tried their solutions for this error number but this also did not work.

I am at a loss as to what to do next. The problem only seems to happen on system reboots or on start up. The saved setting of incoming mail (POP3) "pop.freeserve.com" is lost each time a reboot is carried out. This has then to be entered manually and the change applied each time the system starts up. All other settings, e-mail addresses (lower case)...etc in OE are correct.

Is there anything else I can try.

Thanks again for any help.

Satfanni.

Try to disable email scan, internet filter and download scan in McAfee virus scanner at least temporarily to see if this fixes the problem.

Disable the above
Reenter your Outlook express info
Restart
If this fixes the problem
you may want to switch to another virus scanner
from everything i have read Mcafee doesn't play nice with outlook express or outlook for that matter

AVG has a free virus scanner that scans incoming mail as well
I use this one and haven't had any problems

Thanks again for your help bbeard67.

I am reluctant however to disable all these McAfee security features at once (albeit temporarily). This would surely leave my PC exposed to viruses...etc.

I have also read about the compatability problems with McAfee and OE so I may have to change to Norton or a free service such as the one you suggested. I would however only wish to do this as a last resort as I have only recently paid a full years subscription to McAfee. I have also no other complaints about the McAfee software.

Working on the assumption that it is indeed a conflict between McAfee and OE then why has this problem only manifested itself during the last couple of days? I have had McAfee running for a couple of weeks on this PC with no problems until the last few days.

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.

Regards.

Problem With Outlook Express

Satfanni, if you are sharing the internet or using a wireless connection with others, just let me know.

Jimmie,

I am indeed sharing a wireless connection with one other desktop and one laptop. I am using a D-Link broadband wireless modum router. The router connects directly to the PC I was having problems with via an ethernet lead. The other 2 connect using inbuilt wireless card and laptop card.

The problem has settled down somewhat but I still get the occasional times when I have to carry out the above procedure.

Outlook Express Problem

I think sharing the wireless connection is causing you the problem. Now, the easy way to prove this is to isolate the problem from your PC. For the meantime, don't let the other 2 remote users connect. Check the pop.freeserve.com properties. Whether or not the Outlook Express continue to work normally without the other remote users, we can now focus on the IP Configuration. Need to know what configuration type you chose to connect (i.e, if you are connecting through DHCP or a Dynamic IP address,
etc. from your ISP). It looks like that the 127.0.0.1 which shows in your incoming mail(POP3) is assigned by DHCP (not sure). Try to play with this configuration and let me know what you found out.

I have the same outlook express problem

I also have this problem with Outlook Express. It defaults to that 127.0.0 server when I log off. I am not shareing any accounts but do have a wireless modem. I use verizon and they haven't been any help. As far as my account setup, it matches what verizon says it should be. Could there be some box I've selected under connections or something? Did Satfanni get the problem fixed?
If anyone has a fix, please email it to me at demoser@yahoo.com. I seldom get on a forum so may miss your response if you don't email it.
Thanks.

It looks like it might actually be the AntiSpam that's causing the problem. Disable this and use your built-in junk mail filter in your mail client and see if that fixes the problem.
