Angry System Restore fails to perform

Hullo everyone. On my new Sony VAIO S2 with XP Professional I had a major bug and attempted to use Restore System soft by Windows. Process started, did its work and concluded that my PC was handed back to me unchanged with no restoring effected. There were a few dates available for restore points and soft add-ons, I tried them all, to no avail.
Could there be a (known?) flaw in my System Restore soft and, then, how to repair it or force system to perform. In the past, on other XP machines, I used Restore System a few times quite successfully so, in principle, error is not mine..

System Restore has always been hit and miss. It will rarely work when you really need it. It is a resource hog and virus haven as well. Your best bet is to turn it off.
A nice little program you can use in place, is Erunt. It is very basic, fast, and simple. And it works.

I am glad to see dialogue on this system restore as it has been hit and miss for me for since i bought my notebook back a couple of years ago.
When the computer was fresh out of the box it worked for a few months and then it simply stubbornly dug in its heels where i had created a point before i had installed a program and simply would not restore.
On the advice of my techie friend i disenabled it as he said it is ; as a member earlier mentioned;a haven for "critters" to hang out and unbeknown to the person restoring back to a particular point the critters that you had done scans and thought that were gone are back to their scoundrel selves wreaking havoc on ones system.
In respect of this program ERUNT is it user friendly as i found system restore??? I would appreciate comments. Thankyou
