Windows media player unable to play all the .dat files ????
Hi all,
My Windows Media player[8.0] is able to play few of the dat files from a CD & the remaining dat files from the same CD are not played.I dont know much about how the CD was created [what encoding & all that] ...but i would like to know whether there is any way i can play those non-playing dat files in Windows media player or even Media player. In Media player i get the foll. error of unsupported type.["CAnnot playback the file. The format is not supported(Error:80040265)"] .
Have you tried to see if the dat files play on other players or on anyone else's computer? If not then the problem is with the files themselves not with your player (probably bad encoding).
Good Luck

The dat file does not play i nany other s/m as well. What i need to ask is that is there any way that i can make this file working.....I read somewhere in the forum to use the Windows encoder & create a new file [mpg file ] from this dat file.....Is it possible ?
Well it is possible to re-encode the video stream but the result might be unsatisfactory as there might be corrupt frames in the video stream (probably the reason why your player(s) did not play the file in the first place). You can use VirtualDub to re-encode the file in avi format. If you want to encode it in mpeg format I suggest Canopus ProCoder.
Good Luck

Hi, i've a problem too, with playing DAT file, it doesn't play in Win 2000, but the same is played in XP and Above (VISTA), the catch here is, it can be played in Win 2000 if the file is copied to the Briefcase!!!
