PowerPoint part of file missing or corrupt, unable to open

We had a corrupt microsoft .ppt file on a mac in design studio nothing could open the file. We tried all tricks we found on web such as Insert slides from file, all failed.
But OpenOffice Presentation could open the file and we recovered 90% of info.
OpenOffice is a free office suite that can be downloaded from www.openoffice.org
Jol in Australia.
