Using Ghost on old laptop HD to new one

Any of you out there that has done this...what setup did you use to accomplish this feat. I haven't gotten any response from ishoottrap, so if any of you have done this, that would be great. I have a laptop HD I would like to install this on my new laptop. I can't just swap, connections are different. They both still IDE, but compaq has changed the way they connect.

I've the same problem, Windows XP never display the Login screen. I have tried the non-assign drive letter procedure, but it didn't work. Same problem.

Anybody has another solution? Like plug in the source and dest drives to other PC, and do the "Copy Drive to another"?

I am using Norton Ghost 9. XP SP2, want to upgrade from SATA 80GB to IDE 250GB.

Smile It works!!

Hello Riptyde:

I followed your process and it worked perfectly. My backup drive will now boot perfectly. My computer is a Toshiba A45 laptop with XP. One thing though; I did NOT check the MBR box. I don't know if it would have still worked if I did.

Solution...

I ran into this problem with ghost 10 on an XP system just yesterday.

Its a brand new gateway pentium d with 3 serial ata disks.

Disk0 80gb 7200rpm (windows)
Disk1 80gb 10000rpm (empty)
Disk2 250gb 7200rpm (empty)

I wanted to copy the windows to the fast 1000 rpm disk. Initialy I was partitioning and formatting the disk before running ghost. This cause the problem with the disk being labeled d:.

The fix:
delete all the partitions on the destination disk. When you run ghost tell it to copy the C:\ drive to the open space on disk1. When it completed. I shut down the computer. Disconnected disk0 and moved disk1 to SATA1 port on the motherboard.

Viola new disk is drive C:\

It's too bad ghost10 even lets you choose a drive letter. It should ask you what your intentions are and hide the option if its for a system upgrade of a root disk. This eliminates all the trouble the previouse entries run you though in the registry and recovery disks.

Hope this helps.

Guys,

FYI in the future check the Rad forums for Ghost answers/help.

http://radified.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB.cgi?board=general

and get yourself a copy of the VERY stable Ghost 2003. It's under $10

here: http://royaldiscount.com/synogh20fuve.html.

Bugs

Also make sure you ALWAYS CRC check any Images/clones you make.

If the CRC check fails, do the Image/clone again right then and there.

A failed CRC checked Image/clone will never restore.

I've been reading several forums on issues with norton ghost 9.0 and problems with copying one hdd to another hdd, and one forum was this one. I did manage to make a successfull copy with a successfull boot. (in fact I did this five minutes ago and I am currently running off the "destination" disk).

Any way I wanted to let you guys know what I did in case it can help you in your efforts.

This is my set up:

win xp pro sp2
a single hard drive with clean completely redone install of winxp and all my software. (I will be keeping this in storage as a "master" disk for when ever I want to wipe my hdd clean and start over).

I have a second hdd that I want to copy this to and use as my everyday hdd. This is also in my comp set to "slave" on the same IDE channel as my "master" disk

One of the problems that I was having was that I could make a clean copy, but when I attempted to boot off that copy I would, as someone else also got, get a screen with the win xp logo and nothing else.

When I was setting up the copy I wanted to change the drive letter but was unable to as it was greyed out. What I did was this.

with both hdds in plugged in. My "master" disk as my boot disk (c and my spare as a slave disk (on the same IDE channel) I then went to "start", right click on "my computer", left click on "manage", left click on "disk management". This will list both hdd's. I selected the slave disk, right click and selected "delete partition" and deleted it. It came up with some warning messages and asked if I wanted to force the deletion of the partition (or something along that line). I chose yes. Then I right clicked again to create a new partition. Under the options to create a new partition you can either choose a new drive leter or have no letter associated to it. I chose to NOT have a drive letter. Then it proceeded to ask if I wanted to format. Again I chose not to. After this was done I went back to Norton Ghost.

In the copy drive option in Norton Ghost 9.0 I now could choose a drive letter. But there was also an option for "none". I chose the "NONE" option as I fiqured this information would be copied durring the process, and it was. After copying was done I took out the "master" drive, changed the jumper settings on my "destination" drive to master and booted with no problems.

I hope this helps you guys.

You did find it!
It fixes the empty windows welcome screen.
The secret is on the drive letter assignment, u cant assign one, the cloning will do it for u.

Thank you very much.

For the folks copying or mirroring their C:\ drives, then trying to boot off the "new" drive........but it gets to the blue screen with a winxp logo and nothing else.

The best and easiest way to fix it, boot from an old win98 boot disk in A:\drive. Once at the command prompt type in FDISK /MBR

This will set everything right again, reboot the machine and it will successfully boot into your OS.

Guys,

I had the same problem after ghosting a 160GB HDD to a 320GB HDD (ie, stuck at startup login screen). My original system disk was F: drive and after I did the ghost disk-to-disk the system could not see the F: drive, only the new drive sat as C:.

What I did was to use the following info from MS :-

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=223188

I did this using the Ultimate boot CD remote registry tool logged in as the administrator on the new C: drive disk and then changed the new disk to the F: drive again. Once I did this everything worrked fine with all my user accounts becoming available for login again.

I hope this helps.

Okay, I am doing this very procedure today, and when Norton Ghost asked me what letter I wanted to assign to my new HDD I thought "hmmmm..." and hit google.

Basically I'm putting a larger HDD into my Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop. I've got the new one connected via USB at the moment and am using the Norton "copy disk" feature. I've already copied the Dell Utility partition.

I want to understand correctly - as long as I select "none" as the letter name for the new HDD main partition, it should automatically name it C when I install in internally? (It will be the only HDD drive connect at that time.)

The new HDD has no letter associated with it in the Disk Manager view. Odd though, I don't see the Dell Utility Partition doesn't show up either.

Just want to check things BEFORE I do this!
Thanks!

It works

Holy smokes it all worked the way it was supposed to...

I used the copy drive feature of Norton Ghost 9.0/Windows XP Pro SP2 and:
1) Made sure the new HDD had no drive letter associated with it
2) Chose "none" in Ghost when asked to select the drive letter assignment for the destination drive
3) Shut down, installed new drive internally, made sure no other memory devices or drives were attached
4) Rebooted
5) Rebooted again immediately after new drive was installed according to "reboot now" window alert.
