What is the best anti-virus software?

Now, first off, I was E-mailed by someone, and sent to this site as some osrt of an invitation I guess, whatever First off I want to say hello, these forums are awsome...

-I want to know what and why the best Anti-virus software is. Lately I have been interesting in this. I do not care about $ or price. I simply want to know what the best Anit-virus software is...

I am curently using Norton 2004 Professional, and I want to know if there is something better out there. I have been hearing that Kaspersky is one of the best. I used AVG, but I didn't like it too much, because I know there is better. Please give me a good reason why you like whatever product your are using. thanks

I dont usually post in this section..but tonight a few post caught my eye, and i am bored.
there is no best...just what works best with your setup. I dont like Kaspersky...also known as defender pro it's features are not easy to use for most people, makes a pig squealing sound if it finds something...and it misses alot. I have a copy of 2005 of it.

AVG is very good, light on resources, updates are regular, and it is free.

McAfee had problems with a few things, but seemed to be going great again..a little hard on system resources...but very good again.

PC Cillin, i like it for customer's computers because of it's firewall, it does the jobs and does not pop up telling them they have a hacker attack they feel the need to call ma about and the anti virus is outstanding.

F-Secure...great program, not much else to say, it is straight foward and very good.

e-trust...garbage

norman...ok at times, then they dont update for a while and it gets hammered.

NORTON, satan's evil spawn, eats system resources, causes problems with everything...usually MS updates and norton updates do all they can to destroy your system when they are working together on the same system....system works speeds up the destruction if you use speed disk or disk doctor.

My personal favorite...which I do not have on my machine right now is Panda. really good program, with a great user interface.

right now I have McAfee 2005 and have really good reults..norton 2005 was just like the older versions, all hype and lots of issues.

I have used several, but for the past year have been using NOD32. Cannot fault it - it's brilliant.
Price is reasonable too.

Symantec AV corporate edition. Contrary to what people say about Symantec, it is superb. No resource problems. In any case, what is important to you, protection, or a bit of memory? Though it uses less of your system than some claimed slim AV products.
Never caused a single problem in three years of using it.

My personal favorite (and the one I use on my laptop and desktop) is Eset NOD32 v2.12.3.

NOD32 is known for it's blazingly fast scans and unmatched real-time scanning speed. It has the most advanced heuristics of any anti-virus program out there, so you're better protected against the viruses that haven't been found yet. It also has the highest ranking in Virus Bulletin's listings. On my computer right now (1.25 GB RAM total) it's using 2 processes and a total of 15MB of RAM. It's usually the first thing to show up in my system tray when I startup my comptuer.

I have used NIS2003 and 2004, and compared to NOD32, both turn your computer into a snail.

With NOD32, you don't have the firewall protection, but I use Sygate Personal Firewall for that.

Cheers!

nod32

Are you sure all those things are true? I have heard otherwise about NOD32. I need to personally look into it myself...

NOD32 has caught EVERYTHING thrown at it since I first installed iit a year ago. It is fast and updates itself in the background. I have every confidence in it.
I personally wouldn't change to another AV.

Ok, well, I will try it out on my second computer and see how I like it.

Also, can someone compare NOD32 to Kaspersky for me? thanks.

I am not sure if anyone tried Zone Lab's zone alarm with antivirus, it's very good, doesn't take up alot of memory. and it runs well on old computers too, very good virus protection+great firewall. 5/5

The two AV programs work in very different ways.

Kaspersky depends very heavily on definitions. It has definitions for every single virus out there and has been noted to be the best defined AV program out there.

NOD32 works very differently. It relies in a small part on definitions, but much more on its advanced heuristics. These heuristics basically detect the "behaviour" of viruses and catch them before they can do any harm.

Kaspersky runs quite slowly on most computers since it has to compare files to a large list of definitions.

NOD32 is the fastest AV program that I've seen out there and tested. Also, with low memory usage, it's ranks very highly in my books.

Cheers!

Well, I am satisfied

I am satisfied with Kaspersky, it saves more resources than Norton does... I think. All I like about it, is the protection if offers daily. I could care less about how long it takes to scan. I have a 200gb HD with about 100gbs of it used and it only take 1:30-1:45 to scan everything. Not bad. I don't care about how long it takes. All I care about it resources & protection.

I'm in no way saying that you should drop Kaspersky and jump onto the NOD32 bandwagon. Both are very good AV programs that do their jobs in different ways.

I'm all for low resource usage! I've got 19 processes running at boot, including NOD32, Sygate, AveDesk, WindowBlinds, WinKey, and Synaptics Touchpad drivers.

I don't really think that these virus scanner tests are really all that accurate. I have yet to see two of them with the same results...

I believe that the best way to test out an AV program is to download a free trial and see how it works over the period of a week or so. If you really like a program buy it!
