Norton's Anti Virus problem

trying to renew my norton's anti virus 2000 on windows 98se. renewal process tells me that my version is no longer supported. I have noticed that when I updated via Live Update, the defintions showed version 2001. Can I buy a new subscription of 2001. I don't want to remove my old version & install a new one, which I have. Seems like I always encounter problems removing an old version & installling a newer one.

I agree. Norton, in my opinion, isn't good enough to pay for an upgrade (or a subscription, for that matter). AVG works as well (or better in some cases), the price is right and it doesn't invade the operating system or hog resources.

Agree totally with previous posts.

The pertinent point here is the word "unsupported" it's a dinosaur.

Bin it, get AVG free

I wish I had seen this thread a little earlier. I did invest in an upgrade from NAV 2005 to 2005. The 2004 worked reasonably well ( I believe) to the extent that it did not mess up my OS or OE. The 2005 will not allow me to download Oulook Express email. Only way I can do it is to disable it temporarily. Fortunately the upgrade was free. However because of the technical issues, I am going to look into uninstalling this free upgrade and install AVG. Comments are appreciated.

Thanks

Norton / AVG

I'll not knock AVG. I've used it - it's fine.

I use Norton's 2003, and have only had one virus get in and fire off (as far as I know). It put a shortcut to nothing in before Norton stomped it.

But yeh - it DOES use more system. I can't complain though - the price has always been - shall we say - right. AND there IS that LiveUpdate file.....

Yer NAV2003 was a goodie until they put that code into the registry that negated uninstall/reinstall for another 12 months subscription, the ensuing registry hunt for the entry became tedious after that, the last option was format, lol, all for a 12 month sub.

I used NAV 2003 for 2 years but found it had a dismal record at finding trojans (used Trendmicro Housecall for trojans)

I've had AVG 7 Free since release and no trouble with the programme or viruses since install.

Quick side note here, there is a known problem and patch for the Roxio software (Easy CD Creator etc) conflict with AVG 7 free

As far as the 12-month subscription, there is a file for that. Simply replace the current one with this one, and your good for a year. Good for 2002/2003. Don't know about other versions.

PM ok for requests.

Thanks to all for your comments. I was able to fix my email download issue by disabling NAV2005 during the email download in the OE viewer. Later I found that I got the same result by switching from comprehensive file scan to smart scan. Whatever that does, it does allow me to download my email in OE.

Cheers.
