Angry modem software

Hi

I have just bought a new broadband modem and have installed according to instructions. When I try to install the configuration utility which seems to be a standard setup exe file the following window opens. In the window title bar it says.

16 bit windows sub system (i thought xp is a 32 bit system)

c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running MSDOS + microsoft windows applications.

Then 2 buttons Close or ignore

Can anyone help?

Steve

I had an external USB dialup modem before that would NOT install under XP Home. Tried it with 2 PCs running home - shutdown PC during file copy.

Two other PCs - and one same machine with Pro installed - it installed fine.

Never found help - no new drivers.

That is usually a corrupt file. Uninstall the thingy and reinstall. If that don't work, you are stuffed!! See if there are updated drivers on the manufacturers website.

hahahahaha!!! I bet that isn't the only program you have problems with. I bet you would like a simple solution to your problem. Sorry about the laughing. I just had the same problem and there is a simple solution to it! Go to "My Computer >>> C: >>> Windows >>> repair" (C:\Windows\repair) and you will find that file.(autoexec.nt) Do not Move it, copy it to the "system32" folder.(C:\windows\system32). That will solve your problem.

Hmmm. They merged the 2 threads into the wrong forum. This is an XP problem and should be in the XP forums. Oh well.

All is not lost yet! There is another solution not quite an easy, but now all that hard. Get your XP install CD and do the following.......

1. Insert the CD into the CD drive or DVD drive.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:

expand CD-ROM Drive Letter:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
exit
