Adaware And Viruses\

I have a huge problem with Adaware and viruses getting on to my computer. I run Windows XP and use Norton Antivirus and AVG Antivirus. I also scan my computer about 3 times a week with Adaware.

However, I am constantly plagued by Adaware and viruses. These still implant themselves on my computer. My virus checkers will sport them when a manual scan of the system is done.

My question is - why do these protection programs NOT spot the adaware and viruses as they come in and notify me. They should stop the viruses and trojans at the "back door" but they do not.

Can anyone advise of the best software to protect my system.

Thank you.

1. You should uninstall either Norton or AVG. You should only have one antivirus or they may cause problems with each other.

2. If you are "constantly plagued by Adaware and viruses", then its likely you either have something your antivirus isnt picking up that is re-installing nasties, or you frequently use P2P programs, or visit "rouge" websites, in which case simply stopping that type of activity would help.

3. Antivirus programs are in no way intelligent, its to be expected that some viruses will get past them.

4. You should be fine using either Norton or AVG, just make sure you use one or the other, not both.

My suggestions:

Uninstall either Norton or AVG(leave one of them though).

Update your antivirus definitions and run a full system scan, then run some online scans too.

If you have a connection faster than dialup then think about installing a firewall. You can download a free firewall from the link below:

Help pervent adware/spyware form infecting your system in the first place by installing the below programs:

SpywareBlaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SpywareBlaster can prevent spyware from installing itself on your computer. It does require updating every now and again, but it's rather easy to operate. Just install, run, update, click "Protect," and you're done. Update once every month or so.

IE-SPYAD
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-SPYAD places over 4,000 known evil sites into the Restricted Sites zone in Internet Explorer so they cant execute ActiveX, Java, or place cookies on your machine.

Aslo go to Windows update site and install all available critical updates.

I agree with cache on everything but one point. There's nothing wrong with having two AV programs installed just so long as only one is running full time.

I prefer using AVG for running in the background since it is not the resource hog NAV is.

If you keep both installed (but only one running full time), don't forget to keep both updated. Murphy's Law dictates that if you ever need a "second opinion" AV scan, the virus you're needing to get rid of will be brand new but the AV software won't be able to retrieve an update.

I have so far never used a P2P programs, but now that I have a new faster computer with loads of spare memory, I must admit to being tempted. Are there any around which would not introduce malware, spyware, viruses and so on? And I see that there is a really persistant little devil called a.tribalfusion.com which keeps on putting adverts behind the scenes, congratulating you on being the 7millionth and 2 visitor to the site. etc. No matter which spyware I use, these things keep re-appearing. You usually only find them when you close down your browser; And there they are...
