open "win 98 word pad" in win xp

i used to have win 98 2nd edition
wher i backup many word document on a cd
all is using wordpad (.doc) not microsoft word

now i brought a new pc with win xp home edition
but when i open the word pad
it says:
cannot load word for windows 6.0 files

i tried to change the extension to rtf,txt
but still cannot open

is ther any ways, beside install win98
can open the wordapd in win xp?
