file checker

Hi I was wondering if anyone has run accross this problem:

When you want to back up your data on a CD/DVD, after burning, most of the files are there, but then... some are just empty folders, or some files got corrupted. Any idea as to why this happens? I've exprienced this problem with win 2000 and win xp home, the softwares used for burning are: Record Now, Deep Burner, and win xp's built in cd writer.

So, because this problem happens, I'm looking for a utility that can check and verify that ALL the files were successfully copied, and that they are not corrupted.

Does such a utility exist? and how accurate is it?

Nero has a check box when burning, something like "Verify files after burn", check it and it will do it for you:

Get it here

Or free, through other sources on 't web, leave that choice to you...

You could also create a md5sum for each file and check the md5sum of your files on the disk against the original md5sums. Basically, using an algorithm it creates a string of 24 (i think) alphanumeric characters, i.e slim chance of it going wrong, very slim.

Windows NT, for some reason, dont come with md5sum built into the DOS shell. You will have to download a 'lil .exe to your /windows/system32 dir and the run it. Google for more info.

md5sum'n is overkill though, im sure nero's checking will use some simular hashing algortihm for checking, just though i would give you two options.

Also (i think) alcohol 120% has checking for buring, and it also lets you mount .iso files, .bin's etc without having to burn em - faster and cheaper...google it.

Hope this helps,

Jammin

Ok, seems that record now does have some kind of file integrity check, as this morning I tried making a backup and it said that not all files were copied successfully.

so... that leave the recording problem with window's xp's built in cd burner or with deep burner.

Also, you should try burning at a slower speed, it greatly reduces the chance of corruption, i burn most things at 8 x and linux .iso's at 4x.
