digitize and mix analog sound input in XP

I have a brand new Dell 8400 with XP...It's a very different animal from a 500Mhz win 98 machine ! On the old machine I had a Guillemot sound card with external in/out , so I ( supposedly ) had a dig recording studio. In a nut shell it never worked very well...It became so annoying that I almost threw the whole rig off the back porch.
With this new setup it looks like it might be much simpler to create an adequate dig sound studio but I'm wondering how best to do it.
I can get analog sound in and out ( i think- haven't done it yet but a Dell techie says it's all 'line-level" back there ), so all I need is a bit of software that will allow me to mix tracks, throw in a few bells and whistles and NOT have to deal with 19 different screens for which there is no explanation of how they relate/integrate with each other.
I don't wish to buy a new sound card/sister board, I'm not integrating 'stolen' sound off the web, no"sampling"- I'm just a musician who wishes to play instruments, sing and digitize his own noise.
Who's got the program I'm looking for? Thanks

I would like to recommend a program called N-Track Studio. It is just like having your own recording studio and you can achieve fantastic results. It has just about everything you would find in a professional studio. I have been using it for about a year now and I am extremely happy with it.It costs $49 US but you can download the trial version for free at: www.ntrack.com (sorry I don't know how to make those link things) They also have a discussion forum full of people more than willing to help with any problems you might have using the program.
